MINDI ABAIR JOINS YAMAHA'S ARTIST ROSTER
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Yamaha is proud to announce that Mindi Abair has joined its artist roster. Mindi's new CD, In Hi Fi Stereo, is scheduled for release May 18 on Heads Up International, a division of Concord Music Group. She plays a Yamaha Custom Z alto and a 62R curved neck soprano.
"Sound has always been my #1 priority, and when I heard the sound of this new Custom Z, I had to have it," Mindi says. "It's big with so much depth and character to it. Once I played it, I packed my Selmer Mark VI into the case, and I haven't looked back. I love my Custom Z."
Mindi has played the same 62R curved neck soprano since she was 18 years old, and Yamaha is currently giving it a makeover with custom engraving and new silver plating. "I've always felt that my 62R soprano was so special," she says. "The sound is so warm and it just fills a room. I switch back and forth from my alto on stage and it doesn't feel like ‘doubling.' It's so well laid out as an instrument. It's home for me. It just puts a huge smile on my face to know that my horn that's seen the world and toured with me for so many years is getting a makeover to bring it back to its original glory!"
Mindi just returned home after a Spring tour with her band, which included Jakarta's Java Jazz Festival, a week in London, four nights at Seattle's Jazz Alley, the Berks Jazz Festival in Pennsylvania, stops in Ohio, Florida, California, Tucson and more. "We've had an amazing year on the road so far," she says. "It's only going to kick in harder when my new CD officially releases."
"We are very excited that Mindi has joined the Yamaha Artist family," comments John Wittman, Manager of Artist Relations for Yamaha Corporation of America's Band and Orchestral Division. "We know we will have a long and successful partnership with this extremely talented saxophonist."
Mindi has just completed filming "A Tribute to Diane Warren" on PBS that's scheduled to air in June. She also contributed her talents to Keb' Mo's latest CD, due for release later this year, and you can see her next February in Adam Sandler's newest film, Just Go With It, playing a saxophonist in the wedding band. In April, she was elected to the Board of Governors of the Los Angeles chapter of NARAS, the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, and will serve a 2 year term from 2010-2012.
The list of artists Mindi has toured or recorded with are a testament to her talent. They include the Backstreet Boys, Duran Duran, Mandy Moore, Josh Groban, Adam Sandler, Keb' Mo', Lalah Hathaway, Lee Ritenour, Teena Marie, John Tesh, Bobby Lyle, Jonathan Butler, Peter White and Rick Braun. As a solo artist, this Florida raised, Los Angeles-based performer's unique hybrid sound-a mix of cool vulnerability and utter conviction-has brought her to the top of her game. She tours with her own band to sold out audiences worldwide, hosts a popular nationally syndicated radio show, Chill With Mindi Abair, and has four successful, major label solo releases to her credit: It Just Happens That Way (2003), Come As You Are (2004), Life Less Ordinary (2006) and Stars (2008).
