University of Pittsburgh Accepting Applications for Pitt/Mellon Jazz Scholarship

Mellon Financial Corporation and the University of Pittsburgh today announced that applications are being accepted for the 2007 Pitt/Mellon Jazz Scholarship.

Now in its 21st year, the one-year, $5,000 Pitt/Mellon Jazz Scholarship is awarded by a panel of nationally recognized jazz musicians on the basis of musical ability as demonstrated by an audition tape or CD that includes
samplings of various musical styles. Any full-time undergraduate student who will be enrolled at Pitt during the fall 2007 semester is eligible to
apply for the scholarship.

The current Pitt/Mellon Jazz scholar, guitarist Frank Velardo, is a native of Long Island, New York, and graduate of Hempfield High School in
Landisville, Lancaster County, Pa. A member of the Pitt Jazz Ensemble, Velardo is mixing business courses with his music studies, and performs locally at jazz jam sessions and with his group Wolfgang and the Hat at campus events.

"The 2007 Pitt/Mellon Jazz Scholarship renews support for jazz education and the Jazz Studies program at Pitt that have been hallmarks of Mellon Jazz for more than 20 years," said Rose M. Gabbianelli, Mellon executive vice president and director of corporate affairs. "Mellon Jazz has been a great, long-time friend to the jazz studies program at Pitt, and we're delighted to be joining with Mellon again this year in the selection of a Pitt/Mellon Jazz scholarship recipient," said Pitt Jazz Studies director Nathan Davis.

Applications for the Pitt/Mellon Jazz Scholarship must be submitted by May 14. For more information or to obtain an application, call the
University of Pittsburgh Music Department at (412) 624-4187, visit http://www.pitt.edu/~musicdpt/undergrad/jazzScholarship.html or write to: Jazz
