SINGERS BATTLE FOR JAZZMOBILE ‘BEST OF THE BEST' TITLE Jazzmobile Vocal Competition Returns to Harlem's Uptown Grand on July 26
(Published: July 22, 2010)

NEW YORK (Ju1y 16, 2010)-Singers from across the tri-state area and beyond will wage a fierce battle to claim the "Best of the Best" title at the Jazzmobile Vocal Competition on Monday, July 26 at the chic Uptown Grand restaurant in Harlem. The contest, which sold out last year, begins at 7:00 p.m. and is a highlight of Jazzmobile's Summerfest 2010, 45 concerts and other events throughout New York City reaching approximately 100,000 annually. Summerfest is made possible by major support from the New York State Council on the Arts, New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and lead corporate sponsor JPMorgan Chase.

Nine vocalists-Shirley Crabbe, Emilio Cruz, Terri Davis, Miles Grier, Ella Gahnt, Pete McGuinness, Mavis "Swan" Poole, Marianne Solivan, Cynthia Soriano-emerged from a field of more than 80 registered contestants at an audition at the Harlem School of the Arts on Thursday, June 10. The finalists will compete for the grand prize of $2,000, the coveted Jazzy Vocal Award and the opportunity to perform at an upcoming Jazzmobile event. The first runner-up receives a prize of $1,000.

Judges include Jazzmobile co-founder and National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master Dr. Billy Taylor, jazz pianist and educator Barry Harris and jazz singer Queen Esther. The trio will compare the artists on specific criteria: vocal sound and pitch, lyric phrasing, stage presence and overall musicality in the style of a jazz singer. Songstress Cynthia Holiday, who helped found the competition with Jazzmobile in 2003 and continues to serve as contest director, will serve as emcee, and Lafayette Harris, Jr. will be the evening's music director. Brianna Thomas, whose rousing rendition of Duke Ellington's "Mood Indigo" brought down the house and led to triumph at the competition last year, will perform.

"We are happy to be returning to the Uptown Grand for what's always an exciting evening of fantastic singers, each with a distinct vocal style," said Jazzmobile President and CEO Robin Bell-Stevens, who encouraged New Yorkers to come out and cheer on their favorite contestant. "Each year the contest helps us to introduce the ‘next big thing' in terms of a vocalist, which is in alignment with our mission to present, preserve, promote and propagate jazz, America's classical music."

Doors open at 6:00 p.m. for the best seating. Guests will each pay a $10 cover charge and a $20 per/person table minimum for food and drink. Uptown Grand (formerly Gospel Uptown) is located in Harlem at 2110 Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. Boulevard between 125th and 126th Street. An RSVP is required to 866-628-5052.

Jazzmobile's Summerfest 2010 continues through August 27. In addition to its Wednesday night Grant's Tomb and Friday night Jackie Robinson Park concerts at 7 pm, Jazzmobile swings into neighborhoods across New York City throughout the week. For the full schedule, log onto www.jazzmobile.org.

Jazzmobile thanks Governor David A. Paterson and the New York State Council on the Arts, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, NYC & Company Foundation, the Honorable Christine Quinn and the New York City Council, and its lead corporate sponsor JPMorgan Chase. Media partners include The Network Journal, Jazz Improv Magazine, Hot House Jazz Magazine, New York Amsterdam News, WBGO-FM - Jazz 88.3 (Newark), WKCR 89.9 FM, AM 1600 WWRL and WHCR 90.3 FM.
