(Published: September 17, 2010)
Central Pennsylvania Friends of Jazz (CPFJ) proudly presents Grammy award-winning jazz percussionist Poncho Sanchez and his Latin Jazz Band on October 17, 2010 at 6pm at the Hilton Harrisburg in downtown Harrisburg, PA.
The world-renowned Sanchez is known for his energetic style, as well as his cool renditions of soulful music into an eclectic blend of Latino-soul. He is also one of just a handful of musical performers to be managed by the same record company for over 20 years, having signed on with Concord Music Group, Inc. in 1982.
With 24 CDs under its belt, the band's most recent, "Psychedelic Blues," was released in September 2009 and features Sanchez's own twist on Herbie Hancock's "Cantaloupe Island," Freddie Hubbard's "Crisis" and others, along with original pieces written specially for the CD.
The upcoming October 17th concert is part of CPFJ's Sunday fall concert series and, more importantly, an event to pay homage to the large Hispanic and Latino communities of Harrisburg, PA, and surrounding areas during National Hispanic Heritage Month, which officially spans from September 15 to October 15.
The Trez Music Education Center Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Beth Trez, opens the evening's festivities at 5 pm.
General admission is $25; however, individuals with an I.D. that identifies them as members of any Hispanic or Latino civic organization will be charged just $10 for admission. As is the case with all CPFJ concerts, children under the age of 12 are admitted FREE OF CHARGE and all students receive a discount for admission.
