Marian McPartland & Friends to Perform at Generations in Jazz Festival, Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola, Mon. Oct. 4
(Published: September 22, 2010)
The esteemed pianist Marian McPartland will headline the First Annual Coca-Cola Generations in Jazz Festival on Monday, October 4, at Dizzy's Coca-Cola.
McPartland will be performing with her regular trio--bassist Gary Mazzaroppi and drummer Glen Davis--as well as in duet with the young piano phenom Taylor Eigsti and the elegantly swinging pianist/vocalist Carol Welsman. One of the highlights of this multifaceted evening will be a duet performance by jazz master Kenny Barron with his rising star protegee Helen Sung.
Also on the bill will be young jazz pianists Antonio Madruga, Aaron Diehl, Jonathan Batiste, Chris Ziemba, and Robert Rodriguez, as well as established players Geri Allen, Monty Alexander, Barbara Carroll, Michael LeDonne, Roberta Piket, and Jon Weber.
"It's going to be a ball, with so many young and older musicians together," says McPartland, who also played a vital role in the five Diet Coke Women in Jazz Festivals held at Dizzy's from 2005 through 2009.
"We are reaching a critical stage in jazz music because we've lost a lot of people in the last few years," Dizzy's programming director Todd Barkan told the Wall Street Journal this summer. "Older artists teach a lot by example and the practice of jazz."
In June 2010, Marian McPartland was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in recognition of her services to jazz and to aspiring young musicians in the United States. McPartland, 92, has had a long and distinguished career as a jazz pianist and composer, and as writer, educator, and radio presenter. Her role in the Coca-Cola Generations in Jazz Festival, as both performer and muse, is one she's been playing for many inspiring years.
