Raised in Havana, Jesus "Chuchito" Valdes has inherited more then his father's famous name, he displays the hell-bent intensity and daredevil technique of the elder Valdes - qualities recognized worldwide as hallmarks of Cuban Jazz. - Neil Tesser, author of the "Playboy Guide to Jazz"

Oscar Hijuelos forces the Hispanic immigrant experience close to the center of our cultural consciousness, where it very much deserves to be. - The National Review

(October 12, 2010 - New York, NY) - On Thursday, October 21 at 7pm, The Greene Space at WNYC - in partnership with PEN World Voices Festival and PianoCulture.com - kicks off its GLOBAL PIANO AND LITERARY SALON series with "The Soul of Cuba." The Global Piano and Literary Salon Series is sponsored by HSBC, The World's Local Bank.

World-renowned jazz pianist Chuchito Valdes and novelist Oscar Hijuelos, the first Hispanic to win a Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, will take the audience on a cultural excavation of Cuba through their words and music, providing an immersive experience that explores the diversity and dynamic nature of Cuba and the contrasting influences of Europe, Africa and North America. Both Valdes and Hijuelos will discuss how their work has been shaped by the country's complex history, and the conversation will include a reading of a selected work by Hijuelos and an intimate piano performance by Valdes.

Ina Howard Parker, the creator of Works In Progress, a TV series about global literature and storytelling that is currently in development, will serve as host for the entire Global Piano and Literary Salon Series. Other countries the series will explore are China, Russia, India and the United States.
