This series, dedicated to Miles Davis, will offer two separate evenings featuring four distinctive periods of the chameleon-like jazz legend's career. The music will exemplify the chronological development of Davis' groups over the years.
On May 11, Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra trumpeter Ryan Kisor will perform sections from Davis' bebop and cool period. Then Terence Blanchard will interpret the first incarnation of the Miles Davis Quintet, which included John Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones.
On May 12, trumpeter Nicholas Payton's ensemble highlights Davis' music from his latter quintetes and more. Then the concert moves into the electric Davis years ande the 'grand finale' featuring incomparable bass player and producer Marcus Miller, who played with Davis in his final years up until 1991. Miller is joined by ever-impressive trumpeter Wallace Roney, plus explosive guitarist Vernon Reid.
