May 12 - Nicholas Payton & Marcus Miller

Jazz at Lincoln Center (www.jalc.org) will feature some of the greatest talents on trumpet today in two nightly concerts entitled The Many Moods of Miles Davis featuring Ryan Kisor followed by Terence Blanchard on May 11, then May 12 it will be Nicholas Payton followed by Marcus Miller. Each will have their own quintet.

These concerts take place in Rose Theater in Frederick P. Rose Hall, home to Jazz at Lincoln Center. Tickets begin at $30 and are available at the Jazz at Lincoln Center box office on Broadway at 60th St., by calling CenterCharge at (212) 721-6500 or via www.jalc.org. The Many Moods of Miles Davis is part of the 2007 Upper West Fest.

This series, dedicated to Miles Davis, will offer two separate evenings featuring four distinctive periods of the chameleon-like jazz legend's career. The music will exemplify the chronological development of Davis' groups over the years.

On May 11, Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra trumpeter Ryan Kisor will perform sections from Davis' bebop and cool period. Then Terence Blanchard will interpret the first incarnation of the Miles Davis Quintet, which included John Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones.

On May 12, trumpeter Nicholas Payton's ensemble highlights Davis' music from his latter quintetes and more. Then the concert moves into the electric Davis years ande the 'grand finale' featuring incomparable bass player and producer Marcus Miller, who played with Davis in his final years up until 1991. Miller is joined by ever-impressive trumpeter Wallace Roney, plus explosive guitarist Vernon Reid.
