Pacific Jazz Institute at Dimitriou's Jazz Alley presents The Tony Williams Tribute Band. Band members include Jack Bruce of Cream (bass), John Medeski of Medeski Martin and Wood (piano), Cindy Blackman of Carlos Santana (drums), and Vernon Reid (guitar). Set times are Monday and Tuesday at 7:30p and 9:30p. Doors open at 6:00p Monday and 5:30p Tuesday.
The composer, singer, multi-instrumentalist, and legend, Jack Bruce is hailed as one of the most powerful vocalists and greatest bassists of his time. Bruce has worked with bands such as Cream, Frank Zappa, Tony Williams Lifetime and John Mayall and The Bluesbreakers to name a few. Bruce's improvisational skill and utterly unique, free-spirited approach to composition and performance forever changed electric music. His pioneering, full-toned, free-wheeling playing on the electric bass revolutionized the way the instrument is used and influenced the playing of countless bassists today.
The dedicated piano player John Medeski cross-pollinates diverse musical disciplines, while involving us in his inventive musical conversation. John may be best known as one-third of Medeski Martin & Wood, but his full body of work goes far beyond that ground-breaking trio. He has also begun scoring films, and it is his score that plays throughout the acclaimed film Day on Fire. As of late, John can be found performing solo piano recitals, where he explores classical music, lounge songs, and jazz standards in intimate concert venues.
Drummer and composer Cindy Blackman is known as a powerful percussionist from the hard-bop mold. Blackman is Carlos Santana's touring drummer and keeps a very heavy schedule of touring and recording with Lenny Kravitz. She has been named as "one of the hottest drummers in the business," by the Star-Gazette and is regarded as one of the top drummers in the world. She is a solid, dependable drummer who can easily move from straight-ahead jazz to rock to funk and back again. Her style of playing, influenced by Tony Williams and Art Blakey, is aggressive and combines a seemingly faultless technique.
Guitarist and composer Vernon Reid is a true artist, one whose art is a work forever in progress, from his formative years on the downtown New York jazz/funk/punk scene with Ronald Shannon Jackson's Decoding Society, to his leadership of the pioneering multi-platinum rock band Living Colour, to his collaborations with creative spirits ranging from guitarist Carlos Santana and African singer Salif Keita to choreographers Bill T. Jones and Donald Byrd.
Reid has done a great deal to undermine stereotypical expectations of what music black artists ought to play; his rampant eclecticism encompasses everything from hard rock and punk to funk, R&B and avant-garde jazz, and his anarchic, lightning-fast solos have become something of a hallmark as well.
