After a 2 year hiatus from Trumpets and 1 1/2 years from their last performance, Diane Moser's Composers Big Band returns to Trumpets Jazz Club in Montclair to celebrate their 14th anniversary. Their last appearance was in September of 2009 at the Lake George Jazz Weekend after which their director/pianist/contributing composer Diane Moser decided to put the band on hiatus so that she could take some time to recover and heal from her surgery and hospitalization for GIST cancer.
Starting with an informal rehearsal in 1996, to their first gig in Jan 1997 at Tierney's Tavern, the band has performed over 100 concerts and featured the work of it's resident composers as well as over 100 guest composers and performers. "We started the band as a way to develop and present new works for big band" stated Moser.
"We performed monthly concerts at Tierney's Tavern from Jan 1997 to June of 2003. Then we moved over to Trumpets in Nov of 2003 and performed monthly concerts there until Jan of 2009". During their residencies at Tierney's and Trumpets the band appeared in the Jersey Jazz by the Lake Festival, The Montclair Jazz Festival, Central Presbyterian Church of Montclair, Cecils Jazz Club in West Orange, the Burgdorff Cultural Center in Maplewood, 12 Miles West Theater Company, The New Jersey Performing Arts Center, the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in NYC and the Lake George Jazz Weekend in Lake George, NY.
Their music ranges from very straight ahead to very experimental and have included vocalists, rappers, actors and film.
For this performance the band will feature compositions by it's resident composers Ed Xiques, Rob Middleton, Erick Storckman, Matt Haviland, Jim Cifelli, Rob Henke, Diane Moser along with resident composer-at-large-Russ Vines and vocalist Marcelino Feliciano.
"I'm very excited about this performance" exclaimed Moser "to connect with each other and with our audience-it'll be a homecoming for all of us. But most of all, it'll give me a chance to thank everyone who helped me and the band in our time of crisis in 2009. I would never have made it through that time without the support of the band, family, friends and fans and I am truly indebted to each and everyone of them-they saved my life-and I will be forever grateful to all."
