(Published: May 18, 2011)

Bop Central and Reflections In Rhythm present Grapes & Grooves Jazz and Wine Tasting featuring India Cooke and Bill Crossman Duo Sunday May 29th 2011, 3pm to 6pm.

Renowned violinist India Cooke and inventive pianist Bill Crossman combine to play beautiful, passionate improvised music. Within each piece, the Duo weaves inelements of various world musics yet maintains an overall sound based in African-rooted musics (jazz and blues). They have performed at the Berkeley Arts Festival and other venues, been featured on KCSM-FM radio, and have recorded three CDs. India and Bill are also currently performing together in Bill's multi-genre, musically-improvised opera John Brown's Truth.

In addition to their duo setting India has performed in San Francisco Bay Area symphony and opera orchestras, chamber ensembles, and Broadway shows. As one of California's most respected contract artists, she has performed as featured soloist with Joe Williams and the Louie Bellson Orchestra, and has played with Sarah Vaughn, Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra and many others. Her continuing jazz and improvisation experiences include performances with Pharoah Sanders, Sun Ra, Cecil Tayor, Pauline Oliveros and many others. As an educator, Ms. Cooke was an Artist-in Residence at the San Francisco School of the Arts, and currently teaches at the San Francisco Community Music Center, Mills College, Santa Clara Children's Shelter and at her private studio. She has conducted lecture/performances in Bay Area public schools, colleges, and other educational programs. Bill Crossman has performed with some of the world's greatest jazz musicians and has appeared in performance venues and festivals from coast to coast and internationally. He currently teaches at Berkeley City College and the Oakland Public Conservatory of Music (OPCM), and he hosts OPCM's free-jazz/free-improv monthly open-mike sessions. Bill is currently a member of the India Cooke - Bill Crossman Duo, B-FREE, the Ritual Resurrection Band, and the Troublemakers Union.

Join India Cooke & Bill Crossman Duo for an afternoon of imaginative, soul elevating sounds Sunday May 29th at Grapes & Grooves 5409 Bancroft Avenue, Oakland 3 to 6 pm.
