The title track, which is offered as a free download on the artist website, was a finalist winner in the Jazz Category of the John Lennon Song Writing Contest. The album stands on its own as a complete package of contemporary jazz however winning the prestigious contest also helped to create an immediate buzz about this fast rising star and the recording.

Multi-instrumentalist Smith also had some stellar accompaniment on Stay Awhile that included contributing musicians Jeff Johnson, Eric Eagle, Hans Teuber, Roger Wood, Dan Tyak, Michael Eads, Stephanie Porter, Mycle Wastman, Arturo Rodriguez, Josh Evans and Ryan's father James Michael Smith Jr.

Besides providing thought provoking lyrics Smith and his band spread their wings and fly to show off their prowess on all instrumental tracks "Waltz for Dorothy," "Basie Steps" and "Like That."
