Notes on the artists:
February 11th - Daniel Kelly's Rakonto: With his ensemble Rakonto (the word for "story" in Esperanto), award-winning jazz composer/pianist Daniel Kelly imaginatively mixes recorded interviews with community members with his vibrant compositions. Personal histories of daily life, culture, and immigration are seamlessly entwined into the music, creating a compelling new way to hear the thoughts, dreams and reflections of the community.
Rakonto will perform the hour-long suite - "Rakonto: A Sounding of Community Voices" which was commissioned by Flushing Town Hall and the New York State Council on the Arts.
Over the course of several months, Daniel interviewed dozens of people in the tremendously ethnically diverse community of Flushing, Queens, including students, senior citizens, business owners, children in afterschool programs, musicians performing Chinese, Korean and Indian music, people at churches and social service organizations. The recorded voices of these people are interwoven with the musicians in this imaginative musical ode to the community, creating an opportunity for the stories of many different people to be heard in a new way.
February 11th - WORKS - the resident ensemble of Connection Works. The group consists of flutist Michel Gentile, pianist Daniel Kelly and drummer Rob Garcia, all of whom compose for the group. They perform as a trio as well as with special guests.

"the downtown scene has established an outpost in Brooklyn . . . where local practitioners are presenting a music so diverse and eclectic it doesn't even fit under the general umbrella of avant-garde." - The Wall Street Journal
"the concerts always feature top-flight artists . . . exciting, community-based stuff"
- Jazziz Magazine
"Celebrate music by being a part of the concert series that 'Brooklyn Jazz Wide Open' provides for the community at large!!! We need each other to carry on... Sounds & Feelings" - jazz legend Joe Lovano
"Brooklyn Jazz Wide Open is not just another concert series. One of the elements that makes it special-for both the audience and the musicians-is that artists are invited to discuss their process and answer questions as they arise. This creates a natural, relaxed atmosphere in which the barriers between audience and performers are removed and true understanding and appreciation can take place."
- Eileen Willis, Metropolitan Museum of Art
