Saxophonist Joe Sucato displays youthful exuberance with trio on new CD
For saxophonist Joe Sucato, three is definitely not a crowd.
Along with organist Kerong Chok and drummer Jordan Young, Sucato weaves through the various strands of jazz that stitch together the compelling 3. For a debut album, 3 is a surprisingly confident and refreshingly varied collection of music. The trio's weekly adventures of performing live in the Tribeca neighborhood of New York City has resulted in a stainless, rhythmically tight chemistry that finds each member contributing to the strengths of the song as opposed to individually showing off.
The trio format only works if it doesn't feel any other components are missing, and the relatively minimalist arrangements found on 3 are startlingly effective. For Sucato and his fellow musicians, beauty emanates from subtle touches. On "Willow Weep for Me," Sucato's breezy sax is sweetened by Chok's atmospheric keyboards. The track proceeds at a cool, leisurely pace, only storming forth at the end when Young's drums rush to the climax.
The three are as equally charming with faster cuts as they are with slow jams. Sucato's spirited performance on "Limehouse Blues" is among the record's highlights; here is where he unveils his more playful side, and Young complements his jubilant playing with shuffling drums. The last cut, "Isotope," is where the trio really cuts loose. Sucato's swinging saxophone thrusts the beat into hyper drive as Chock's jumpy organ and Young's pounding drums solidify the group's youthful exuberance.
