THE NEW SCHOOL FOR JAZZ AND CONTEMPORARY MUSIC LAUNCHES JAZZ PRESENTS SERIES WITH “MONK AT 90”
(Published: October 05, 2007)

NEW YORK, September 25, 2007–The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music celebrates the 90th birthday of Thelonious Monk with two concerts featuring top artists including Slide Hampton, Junior Mance, Jimmy Owens, Ben Allison, and Matt Wilson as part of its October programs. The legendary pianist and composer will be honored with two different takes on his work: an October 10th concert, The Monk Influence, presents his compositions in their mainstream tradition, while an October 30th concert, The Monk Confluence, re-imagines them in a contemporary way, speaking to both the continued relevance of his work and the changing culture of Jazz.
“Monk’s influence permeates all aspects of performed and composed music from the 1940s to the present; his creativity is the foundation upon which today’s jazz artists stand,” said Martin Mueller, Executive Director of New School Jazz. The concerts are part of Jazz Presents, an annual series at The New School that showcases the work of New School Jazz faculty in collaboration with the rising stars—New School Jazz alumni and students. Jazz Presents is sponsored by a grant from the New York State Council on the Arts and The Julien J. Studley Foundation.
This month the school will also be continuing its fourth season of Monday Nights at Sweet Rhythm, the school’s concert series at the premier jazz club featuring students, alumni, and special guest artists.
