The Music of Dexter Gordon: A Celebration for Dex@90
(Published: January 25, 2013)

The Music of Dexter Gordon: A Celebration will be held for two nights beginning Tuesday, February 26, 2013, the eve of what would have been Dexter's 90th birthday, at Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola at Jazz at Lincoln Center. Dexter Gordon is the world-renowned jazz musician, band leader, composer, Academy Award nominated Actor (for the leading role in the film Round Midnight) and the world's first Bebop tenor saxophonist. Dexter Gordon was born on February 27, 1923 and passed away on April 25, 1990.

For two nights, musicians under the leadership of Dexter's pianist George Cables, who performed and recorded with him extensively, will celebrate his legacy by performing some of his favorite tunes and original compositions. Drummer Victor Lewis, who also performed and recorded with Dexter, will be anchoring the band on drums.

On the first night, Tuesday, February 26, at 6pm, a special listening session of Dexter's recordings will be hosted by Michael Mwenso, the late night host at Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola with guests Michael Cuscuna (Dexter's close friend and producer on Columbia Records) and pianist George Cables. Guests are encouraged to make reservations early for the listening session followed by the first set at 7:30pm.

On Wednesday, February 27, 2013, in celebration of Dexter's 90th birthday, The Dexter Gordon Society will be launched. The Dexter Gordon Society was
created to honor, preserve, document, and present the life's work and musical legacy of Dexter Gordon.

Musicians who will be performing at the celebration in addition to George Cables (www.georgecables.com) and Victor Lewis(www.facebook.com/victorle...) will include Dezron Douglas, bass (www.facebook.com/dezron.d...) ; Joe Locke, vibes (www.joelocke.com) ; Brandon Lee, trumpet (www.bleejazz.com) ; Walter Blanding, Jr., tenor saxophone (www.facebook.com/walter.b...) ; Jerry Weldon, tenor saxophone (www.jerryweldon.com). Other events are in the final planning stages for fall 2013 and the entire year ending on February 27, 2014.
