"Jazz at the Hobby Center" featuring Trumpeter Sean Jones and the Conrad Johnson Orchestra

On April 20, 2013, Houston's Hobby Center's Zilkha Hall will be strutting to the harmonic rhythms of the Conrad Johnson Orchestra, under the leadership of Music Director James Williams, with the soulful notes of Sean Jones' trumpet setting the tone. "The Jazz at the Hobby Center" concert promises to be a rich synthesis of down-home Texas blues and sophisticated jazz reminiscent of Conrad "Prof" Johnson's deep musical heritage that embodies the music legend's brand of excellence.

Jones, the country's premier trumpeter, is currently the Artistic Director of the Pittsburgh and Cleveland Jazz Orchestras. He is also a Professor of Music at Duquesne University. Jones' sixth CD, "No Need for Words," sums up his overall approach, music that cuts straight to the emotional heart. In 2010, Jones stepped down from his position as Lead Trumpeter of Wynton Marsalis' Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, a position that Jones held for over half a decade.

The Conrad Johnson Orchestra embodies the spirit and vision of the late jazz great Conrad "Prof" Johnson whose influence on jazz in Houston and nationally is legendary. "Prof's" love of music inspired him to teach, play and direct big band jazz in Houston with a passion that is unparalleled. His compelling story of using music education as a tool to mold young lives is now an emotionally charged documentary on the big screen entitled, "Thunder Soul." Oscar winner Jamie Foxx served as executive producer.

Music Doing Good, a presenting sponsor of the concert, will award four Houston area students each a $1500 music scholarship to help them pursue their music education. The scholarship recipients will be announced during the concert.
