KINGSTON, NY SWINGS WITH PERFORMANCES BY JAZZ MASTERS AND LOCAL MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

THE CULMINATION OF CATSKILL JAZZ FACTORY'S 2012-13 MASTER CLASS RESIDENCY PROGRAM IN KINGSTON
(Published: April 08, 2013)

WHO:
The Catskill Jazz Factory (CJF), a program of the Catskill Mountain Foundation, hosts and unites prominent U.S. jazz musicians - Wycliffe Gordon (trombone) Brandon Lee (trumpet), Alvin Atkinson (drums), Yasushi Nakamura (bass), and CJF Artistic Director Aaron Diehl (piano) - with approximately 100 middle and high school students from the Kingston Public School District in unforgettable performances.

WHAT:
Aaron Diehl, CJF Artistic Director and one of the country's foremost jazz pianists, will present a high energy musical journey with his professional ensemble and Kingston students. Over the past year, Aaron and other jazz musicians conducted a ‘master class' residency with local school teachers Dan Shaut and Mike Treat in teaching and mentoring students the fundamentals of playing jazz, ensemble balance and development, melodies via pentatonic scale, and improvisation.

Partnering with the Kingston Public School District, approximately 1,500 - 2,000 students (grades 3-5) will be bused to the 10:00 am concert, while the 2:00 pm concert will be attended by high school students, senior citizens and the community.

WHEN:
Thursday, May 9: 10:00 am
This concert will showcase the fundamentals of jazz - swing, blues and improvisation - featuring performances by the MC Miller Middle School and JW Bailey Middle School Jazz Ensembles and the Aaron Diehl Ensemble.

Thursday, May 9: 2:00 pm
This concert will be a memorable opportunity for the KHS Jazz Band and the KHS Jazz Ensemble to showcase their hard work and perform with Aaron Diehl's professional jazz ensemble. Teachers Dan Shaut & Mike Treat will also perform.

WHERE:
The Ulster Performing Arts Center
601 Broadway, Kingston, NY 12401
