MOTEMA FOUNDER/PRESIDENT JANA HERZEN TOURS IN US & EUROPE IN APRIL TO SUPPORT PASSION OF A LONELY HEART
(Published: April 11, 2013)

FIRST SHOW: BLUE NOTE (NYC) BRUNCH APRIL 14

In a year where her multi-Grammy nominated label turns ten and continues to release some of the most exciting and innovative music on the scene (such as April's mysterious Transcendence from Jaimeo Brown, called "one of the best debut albums I've heard" by Downbeat Publisher Frank Alkyer, and Breakthrough from Grammy-nominated pianist, Eldar) singer/songwriter and guitarist Jana Herzen has quietly stepped forward to remind the world of her own rightful place as one of Motéma's truly distinctive artists. Since her second album, Passion of a Lonely Heart, was released in November of 2012, the beautifully intimate duo project with renowned bassist Charnett Moffett has elicited glowing accolades from top outlets internationally: Downbeat; Jazz Times; Jazziz; the French publications Liberation, Jazz Magazine, So Jazz and TSF; Germany's Jazz Thing; iTunes , which singled the album out as 'Recommended'; Emusic , which gave the project an Editor's Pick and nicely summed up the duo's aesthetic as 'Flickering songs for the quiet moments of the day."

"One of the most enjoyable and eclectic vocal albums in any
style of music in recent months"
- Lucid Culture

"Herzen's seven originals reflect a refreshing
maturity and a rare narrative richness."
- Jazz Times

Following a four show mini-tour in Paris in February, which gained significant press and radio attention both for Passion of a Lonely Heart and for Motéma's 10th Anniversary, Herzen is once again taking some time away from her label-head role to perform two shows on April 14 at The Blue Note Brunch in New York City, and then to take to the road for a series of performances that will bring her and Moffett to venues in Florida, Germany and Prague.

Passion of a Lonely Heart benefits from the extraordinary virtuosity of bassist Charnett Moffett, whose own solo-bass release,The Bridge (Solo Bass Works), drops today, April 9th. Moffett is supporting that release with "Moffett Meets Manhattan" an unprecedented series of eight solo bass shows in key clubs throughout Manhattan. Several songs from that CD will also be showcased by Moffett at the Blue Note Brunch, with sets at 12:30pm and 2:30 PM.

As comfortable performing in the jazz vernacular as she is touching down on the side of her world and folk influences, Herzen's work earned her accolades from allaboutjazz.com, which called Passion of a Lonely Heart a "mellow treat of an album" and from iTunes, which praised her rendition of "'Tis Autumn" as a "sublime, heartfelt interpretation," and noted the album as 'Recommended', as did allmusic.com, Emusic and Critical Jazz.
