Dena DeRose Celebrates “Live at Jazz Standard (Vol. 1)” With NYC Appearances
(Published: January 31, 2008)

Maxjazz recording artist Dena DeRose is pleased to announce that she will make a return to New York City with a string of shows celebrating the release of her new CD, “Live at Jazz Standard, Volume One.”

DeRose, on piano and vocals, will appear with a trio lineup featuring drummer Matt Wilson and bassist Martin Wind, performing four shows at the Kitano Hotel on February 8 and 9, marking her first NYC appearance since 2006 after touring extensively throughout Europe and Japan. “Live at Jazz Standard, Volume One” is one of three new releases from the singer/pianist, joining “The Nearness of Two” on Italy’s Gofour Records and “Dec. 2 Quartet” on Japan’s Vega label.

The critics seem to agree as well. Fred Bouchard of Downbeat magazine recently hailed “Live at Jazz Standard, Volume One” as “…potent cocktails of freshened standards laced with wise and sensitive original ballads,” while Ken Dryden of Allmusic Guide calls Derose “..the real deal, able to bring out the best in the music and lyrics to any given piece.” Jazz Times made it three, praising the lineup as “…one of the most adroit, intelligent and downright powerful trios in the business.”

Dena began formal piano training at the age of three, and studied classical music through high school. But by 17, she was so compelled by jazz that she would sneak out of school and drive four hours into New York City to hear idols like Hank Jones, Kenny Barron and Mulgrew Miller perform. By 1991, she had relocated to New York City to build a jazz career.

Trained as a pianist, DeRose didn’t discover she could sing until carpal tunnel syndrome and arthritis forced her to stop playing the piano while only in her twenties. While recovering (and wondering if she would ever play again),

DeRose accidentally discovered her ability to sing when a friend dared her to try it. For the next two years, she honed her vocal talent, working and performing as a jazz vocalist. Today, she represents the best of both worlds – as an accomplished pianist, and as a mature, refined vocalist.

Dena has performed with the Ray Brown Trio, the Clark Terry Quintet, McCoy Tyner, Benny Golson, Ray Drummond, Bill Henderson, Houston Person, Lewis Nash and Ken Peplowski, and currently teaches at the University of Music and Dramatic Arts in Graz, Austria.

DeRose has been featured in the New York Times, The Advocate, and on NPR: “Piano Jazz with Marian McPartland;” “Morning Edition;” and on “Jazz Set with Dee Dee Bridgewater.”
