Creative Innovation Centre, Jazz Nights 2014 Take Off in Somerset England
(Published: January 03, 2014)

Starting on Thursday 16th January

Cool, funky and friendly

The Creative Innovation Centre, Paul Street, Taunton is moving into its 2nd year of operation and is delighted to announce a fabulous line up for its new Jazz Nights on Thursdays in 2014.

CICCIC has become one of the best places in Somerset for culture vultures and creative people, appealing not only to music fans but attracting a wide audience for visual arts, theatre, and business focused events.

2014 kicks off with Conjunto Gringo on January 16th at 7.30pm - Cool jazz and sexy salsa what a fabulous combination! Conjunto Gringo is Andy Hague's new project reflecting his love of Cuban and other Latin music, in which the quintet is expanded to octet by the addition of another trumpet, trombone and congas. The band features some of Bristol's finest jazz soloists in tunes by Tito Puente, Mongo Santamaria, Afro Cuban All Stars and even some latinised Stevie Wonder. Jonny Bruce & Andy Hague - trumpets, Ben Waghorn - sax, Nick Attwood - trombone, Jim Blomfield - piano, Thad Kelly - bass, Mark Whitlam - drums & Lisa Cherian - congas.

Bristol based trumpeter Andy Hague has been leading his quintet for over twenty years, and it is one of the most popular bands in the area.
The group has made many appearances at festivals such as Brecon, Swanage and Glastonbury, and recorded four broadcasts for the BBC's Jazz Notes programme back in the 90s.

The band's Jazz Services tour in 2007 received a glowing review in The Independent on Sunday - "The collective impact of what amounts to a South-West supergroup was close to overpowering."

The Innovation Centre's director Richard Holt said, "CiCCiC is all about new, exciting cultural and creative events - great music, art & theatre from the South West and beyond, and giving audiences some surprising, memorable experiences that open up new worlds without dumbing down. In these challenging times, we thought it was crucial to send out a positive message about culture in Taunton and Somerset - it's still thriving and we are working hard to deliver fantastic events for audiences and artists."

Kevin Figes Jazz Quartet - Saxes and compositions

Figes' Quartet plays his own distinctive compositions and has performed all over the UK for many years to enthusiastic audiences. Three CDs have been released ("Circular Motion" (Edition), "Tables and Chairs" and "Hometime" (Pig)) to widespread critical acclaim and airplay.

The compositions are constantly developing to produce work which is challenging and contemporary. Influences include David Binney, Dave Holland and Chris Potter but also many more spread across many musical genres. The aim is to produce personal music in a fearless and evolving way.
