Emmanuel Baptist Church Celebrates Black History Month with NEA Jazz Master Barry Harris

(BROOKLYN, NEW YORK- January 23, 2014): As one of jazz's living legends, NEA Jazz Master Dr. Barry Harris will perform at Emmanuel Baptist Church's first Jazz Vespers of 2014, in honor of Black History Month. It will take place in its standing home at the historic Emmanuel Baptist Church, 279 Lafayette Avenue, located in the Clinton Hill section of Brooklyn, New York, on February 23, 2014 at 3:00 PM.

The recurrent theme of the Jazz Vespers is: "Experience the Presence of God through the Sounds of Jazz." This upcoming Jazz Vespers features NEA Jazz Master and legendary pianist Barry Harris. Accompanied by Ray Drummond (bass), and Leroy Williams (drums), the Trio will be performing a mix of selections that will be sure to return the audience to the nostalgia of jazz of the past, and introduce a whole new audience to the legendary work of Dr. Harris.

Barry Harris is one of the world's greatest living jazz pianists, and an internationally renowned Jazz Performer, Composer and Teacher. With an ability to interpret the compositions of Thelonius Monk, and a sound often compared to Bud Powell, Harris developed his own unique bebop style that legions of fans have come to love. Aside from leading his own groups and composing music, Harris has recorded with performers such as Cannonball Adderley, Dexter Gordon, Illinois Jacquet, Yusef Lateef, and Lee Morgan.

Currently in its third year, the Jazz Vespers series has built a following of jazz lovers around New York City and Brooklyn, and continues to secure well-respected jazz musicians that bring an unmistakable feeling of celebration for God, and the jazz art form. Jazz Vespers is more than just a performance, it is an experience. As one past attendee remarked, "I enjoy and look forward to Jazz Vespers! It is an amazing, spiritual, and, musical mixture. Praise God for Jazz!"

Emmanuel Baptist Church's Jazz Vespers performances are typically held every other month. For more information on Emmanuel Baptist Church Jazz Vespers, go to http://ebcconnects.com/jazzvespers/ or call (718) 622-1107.
