Caramoor Jazz Festival Begins Tonight with Cécile Mclorin Salvant
(Published: July 26, 2014)
Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts presents a celebration of jazz with a performance by jazz phenom Cécile McLorin Salvant tonight and the 2014 Caramoor Jazz Festival on July 27.
On July 26, Club Caramoor presents the Caramoor debut of jazz vocalist Cécile McLorin Salvant in the intimate Spanish Courtyard. Since winning the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Vocals Competition in 2010, she has rapidly risen to the top of Jazz’ “must have” lists. Her 2014 recording, WomanChild was nominated for a Grammy® Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album and has been hailed by The New York Times for her evocative performances. “If anyone can extend the lineage of the Big Three — Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, and Ella Fitzgerald — it is this 23-year-old virtuoso. Ms. Salvant has it all: perfect pitch and enunciation, a playful sense of humor, a rich and varied tonal palette, a supple sense of swing, exquisite taste in songs and phrasing, and a deep connection to lyrics.”—The New York Times.
On July 27, the 21st Annual Caramoor Jazz Festival welcomes some of the rising stars from today’s jazz scene as well as celebrated chart-toppers for a day of swingin’ performances. Audiences can enjoy some of today’s most influential artists in jazz on Caramoor’s distinguished 90-acre garden estate in Katonah, N.Y. The day-long festival begins with a must-see performance for the whole family when 12-year-old piano sensation Emily Bear and her trio take the stage. Next, Emily and jazz master John Beasley lead a jam session with an elite group of hand-picked musicians from New York’s best learning institutions of music. Trombonist Steve Turre will be on hand to pay tribute to departed jazz trombone legend, JJ Johnson, with the Steve Turre All-Stars. The tribute features a special performance and discussion of his work. Later, John Beasley returns to present a fabulous set of the music of Thelonious Monk, and pianist Renee Rosnes offers a conversation and performance about the enduring music of tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson. The day closes with Arturo O’Farrill and his Grammy® award winning Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra who will bring their energy and excitement to the Venetian Theater audience.
