Walter Smith III to release Still Casual on September 9, 2014
(Published: August 31, 2014)

"If you've put an ear to some of the most talked-about jazz bands of the last few years, you've likely heard [tenor] saxophonist Walter Smith III" touts Patrick Jarenwattananon of NPR Jazz - A Blog Supreme. Composer and saxophonist Walter Smith III shares his unique artistry on his upcoming release, Still Casual on September 9, 2014. Showcasing original compositions and arrangements, Smith leads a group of Jazz's next generation of gifted talent including Taylor Eigsti (piano), Matt Stevens (guitar), Harish Raghavan (bass), Kendrick Scott (drums), and special guest Ambrose Akinmusire (trumpet).

Still Casual brings Smith to new heights as his most compelling and reflective album to date. "The focus for me on this album was composition, moving beyond things that are complex or cool for effect, but more in tune with music existing for different moods", explains Smith. A common thread that resonates throughout the music of this album is family, as Still Casual includes music inspired by his both his son and daughter. Also from his musical family, Smith draws on energy from Jimmy Greene, Sean Jones, Kendrick Scott, and Matt Stevens. Smith elaborates "This album bridges the connections of our lives".

2014 stands to be a pivotal year for Walter Smith III with numerous collaborations in the works. Building off his feature on NPR's The Checkout with host Josh Jackson ( http://bit.ly/ws3npr ), Smith will be featured this fall on Jackson's program on the legendary WBGO.

Reaching across the pond, Smith was awarded the 2013 French American Jazz Exchange Grant with French pianist Laurent Coq to create a suite of music exploring the early life and achievements of Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de La Fayette (http://bit.ly/ws3french). This music is to be recorded and released in the next year. In creating new creative partnerships including D'Addario Woodwinds, North Coast Brewing, and his alma mater The Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz, Walter will continue his work as a Jazz educator across the globe throughout the next year.

In the Jazz tradition, Smith has developed under the wings of many of music's greats. Jazz legend Benny Golson heralds' saxophonist Walter Smith III as "a distinct 'voice' with no vestiges of any other voice. Only his own. This is so impressive since there so many similar sounds and concepts today". Walter has been a member of several legendary groups (recording and touring) including the Ambrose Akinmusire Quintet, Terence Blanchard Quintet, Roy Haynes Fountain of Youth Band, Eric Harland's Voyager Band, Jason Moran's Big Bandwagon, and the Christian McBride Situation band.

Still Casual will be released worldwide on September 9, 2014 through digital outlets including www.waltersmith3.com, iTunes, Amazon, and CD Baby. Preorder the album today on iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/still-casual/id899835367
