Saxophonist Tim Warfield's CRISS CROSS release "One For Shirley" due May 20, 2008
(Published: May 19, 2008)

Most notably and previously recognized as a veteran in the groups of New Orleans trumpeter Nicholas Payton and bass phenom Christian McBride, saxophonist Tim Warfield shows his versatility as he explores a much different territory than on his previous Criss Cross releases.

His latest release "One For Shirley", is a tribute to the legendary organist Shirley Scott. It features the vibrant trumpeter Terell Stafford, drummer Byron Landham, percussionist Daniel G. Sadownick, and a "newcomer" of whose performance deserves special mention, Pat Bianchi on Hammond B-3 organ.

Warfield performed and recorded with Scott back in the early 90's onstage, as well as in the house band of actor/comedian Bill Cosby's Televison Game Show, You Bet Your Life . "Shirley was my very good friend and mentor, so it is only befitting that I record a work in her memory", Warfield explains.

Warfield, featured on both tenor and soprano saxophones, incorporates slow smoltering grooves oozing of coolness, with a soulful approach that explores the more swinging and funky sounds of jazz. The recording has moments very reminiscent of the classic 50's and 60's Blue Note era, as exemplified on the Sonny Bono classic, "The Beat Goes On," and his original, "Sometimes You Got To Let The People Know", yet he brings the Hammond B-3 sound to present, leaving a more personal touch with his masterfully beautiful original composition "Tokyo" Girl".

Tim Warfield's "One For Shirley", on Criss Cross is available Tuesday, May 20th.
