USA Today Praises "Stark, Sparkling Verses," as Ellis Paul's Chasing Beauty is Released to Growing Coverage; Huffington Post, No Depression Up Next, as Major U.S. Tour Continues

Ellis Paul's Heroes Drive a Diverse, Fan-Funded, 14-Song Collection: "Perfect examples of how unsung inventors, musical innovators and architects worked against the odds to inspire others" (Examiner .com)

In her most recent USA TODAY ‘Listen Up Playlist', music critic Elysa Gardner selected the track ‘Wasted', from Ellis Paul's new CD ‘Chasing Beauty,' as one her ‘10 most intriguing tracks of the week.'  She praised:

"Stark, sparkling verses segue into warmly pining choruses on this track from Paul's Chasing Beauty."

Other writers have described the 14-song collection as "Perfect examples of how unsung inventors, musical innovators and architects worked against the odds to inspire others" (Examiner.com). Indeed, Ellis Paul focuses on the theme of ‘Heroes' for this new album - some well-known, as in the case of the legendary Johnny Cash, and some unlikely candidates, including the men and women who built the Empire State Building, and even Jimmie Angel (a barn storming pilot in the 1930s who discovered the world largest waterfall that now carries his name.) "His newest, fourteen-track album, 'Chasing Beauty', seems to encapsulate all his talents for telling absorbing tales, observing human ire, crafting hummable tunes and celebrating unbreakable spirit." (Pennyblackmusic). Listen to audio samples, here:

A year and a half in the making, and Produced by Kristian Bush of Sugarland and Brandon Bush of Train, the fan-sourced ‘Chasing Beauty' has a crackling energy beneath its surface that mirrors the eclectic range of inspirations that fueled Paul's songwriting. "In the best Folk tradition, his music is poignant and at times activist driven, yet still fun and sweet," noted Cincinnati City Beat.  The Record-Journal (CT) highlighted "the country/pop appeal of (the track) "Never Want To Lose You," as the song contains the perfect formula for a successful hit single." Press interest continues to build, with tour preview columns running each week, including multiple placements in Paul's hometown Boston Globe, and upcoming interview and/or review coverage slated for Huffington Post, No Depression, Boston Noise, Medleyville, The Alternate Root and more.

‘Chasing Beauty' is a literate album that shines a light on intimate victories as well as larger-than-life accomplishments -- Ellis Paul reveals a bit of his own story, summing up who he is a person even as he chronicles who we are as an American people: "his recorded stories are earthy, sensitive and richly detailed..."

Ellis Paul's Current Tour Celebrates 'Chasing Beauty'  By Lisa Torem (Excerpts)
http://www.examiner.com/a...

Maybe living in Maine among the hardworking trades people or spearheading the Boston folk music revival inspired Ellis Paul's prolific talent. Or maybe it was the fact that after the former track star suffered a sports injury, he bonded wholeheartedly with his acoustic guitar . Whatever the reason, Ellis Paul has continued to write songs about everyday people, who achieve seemingly impossible dreams through dedication and spirit. In his new CD, 'Chasing Beauty,' this award-winning singer-songwriter provides perfect examples of how unsung inventors, musical innovators and architects worked against the odds to inspire others.

BOSTON - THE NOISE -
CD REVIEW October issue -  (by A.J. Wachtel)
http://thenoise-boston.co...
These are great songs with nice melodies and harmonies. And all the tunes have a story and a message. Ellis is a modern day Woody Guthrie who has been on the road touring for more than 20 years, doing 200 shows a year; these compositions are his memories and recollections of a long life of music. There is a bit of Cat Stevens here. There is also a bit of Willie Nelson here. And his passionate performances stamp every note with his own brand. "You've been living like a rose in a cage," "This is how trouble begins..one touch could kill... one kiss could do me in" and "Every dream that could cross our lips lies just beyond our fingertips" showcase his great writing skills. Throw in his acoustic guitar, mandolin, banjo, electric guitar, strings, keyboards, horns and lap steel and you have a great sounding CD. Ellis even uses a marxsophone on the title track! My favorites are: "Never Want To Lose You," "Drive-in Movie," and the title track, "Chasing Beauty"; all are lush folk ballads that are easy listening with a great sound and feel. Produced by Kristian Bush of Sugarland and Brandon Bush of Train, this music gets you into the right mood, right away.

THE RECORD-JOURNAL (Meriden, CT)
By Jim Pasinski  (excerpt)
http://jpsmusicblog.blogs...

The new fourteen song release begins with the country/pop appeal of "Never Want To Lose You" as the song contains the perfect formula for a successful hit single. Ellis showcases a more rockabilly sound with "Kick Out The Lights (Johnny Cash)" as the song continues to grow and have a bigger sound, featuring an amazing lap steel guitar solo from Megan Lowell. Ellis Paul pours his heart into gentle sway of "Drive-In Movie" and paints a picture in your mind with "Waiting On A Break." You can feel his passion for stories on the telling of "Jimmie Angel's Flying Circus" and sings to his daughter in "Hold Me, Scold Me." Ellis also finds country gold in the feel good sound of "Chasing Beauty," before closing with the gentle folk storytelling of "One Kiss Could Do Me In."

(Read the full interview via the above link. Excerpt):

Ellis Paul is a man of many talents, and even though obstacles have littered his path, like when his track star days were railroaded by an injury, he has always come back full force. In fact, it was that incident that brought him closer to his six-string and even closer to that ultimately intimate world of writing; his newest, fourteen-track album, 'Chasing Beauty', seems to encapsulate all his talents for telling absorbing tales, observing human ire, crafting hummable tunes and celebrating unbreakable spirit.

CINCINNATI CITY BEAT
http://citybeat.com/cinci...
(excerpt) Ellis Paul is a musician who has hung in there over the years despite the ups and downs of the music business. In a classic case of "what goes around comes around," Paul and his nearly 20 albums have now found themselves in the middle of the current Folk music revival.

Like the great folk singers of years gone by, Ellis Paul travels the country and takes pride in delivering his message to listeners of all ages. In fact, on September 1st, he released a parallel children's book/cd, also focusing on the subject of ‘Heroes', but presented in an age-appropriate manner (and highlighting different historical figures). Published by the Albert Whitman Company, 'The Hero in You' is based on Paul's children's album of the same name, which received a Gold Medal Award from the Parents Choice Foundation. The picture book/cd features songs describing the lives of the famous, such as Ben Franklin, Rosa Parks, Thomas Edison. And also the not-so-famous, including Tee Tot, Nellie Bly and Chief Joseph. These are songs written for parents and families.  More information about the book, here:
http://www.albertwhitman.com/content.cfm/bookdetails/The-Hero-in-You-(Book-and-CD ) .

Ellis Paul has been living on the highway for 26 years, touring all corners of America, and as a result, his songwriting is broader than just one town. He is chronicling an American story, a varied regional history. From his new biography (http://www.ellispaul.com/... ): ...these stories are a continuation of tales Paul has told for more than a quarter century, over the expanse of nineteen albums, numerous critical kudos (15 Boston Music Awards alone), inclusion in several movie soundtracks, and stages he's headlined both near and far. "I've got a car with over 475,000 miles on it, and it's my third road vehicle," Paul declares. "I've been doing 200 shows a year for over twenty years. There isn't a town in the country where I won't find a friend. I'm a nomad. And I'm gonna write and play until I'm gone."

‘Chasing Beauty' is being supported by a major U.S. tour and radio campaign. A vinyl double album version will be available as well, featuring additional songs. As referenced above, it was produced by Kristian and Brandon Bush and primarily engineered and mixed by Tom Tapley (Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam, more). Red Molly, Kristian and Rebecca Loebe provide backing vocals and a slew of instrumental gurus come thru on various instruments including Travis McNabb on drums (Better than Ezra, Sugarland) Tim Smith on bass and guitar (Sheryl Crow) and Megan Lovell (the Lovell Sisters) on slide and dobro.

"Despite his success and sense of history, Mr. Paul remains an artist with his eye on the future and an interest in discovering the transformative potential in his music." - The New York Times
