Jazz Luminary Headlines Fall Jazz NightOut
(Published: October 30, 2014)

November 22, 7:30pm at The Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center
"Ector is an ingenious musician...whose work crackles with
energy and resourcefulness." All About Jazz

Arts Center Killingworth presents the Fall 2014 Jazz NightOut with headliner Vince Ector and his "Organatomy" Band. Ector, one of the most in-demand percussionists in the New York area has performed with jazz greats such as Freddie Hubbard, Randy Weston, James Moody, Slide Hampton and Jimmy Heath. He currently performs with the Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All-Stars, Nat Adderley Jr., Ben E. King, and is the Instructor of Jazz Percussion at Princeton University.

Jazz NightOut, held at the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center, 300 Main Street, Old Saybrook, Connecticut, is an evening of impressive jazz performances, food and wine.

Ector brings with him Kyle Koehler on organ, Bruce Williams on saxophone, and Matt Chertkoff on guitar. The band will perform a variety of jazz classics including Dizzy Gillespie's Con Alma, Duke Ellington's In a Sentimental Mood, Don Patterson's Aries, Joe Henderson's Jinrikisha as well as original works by Ector. In addition to being a leader and sideman, Ector has released several albums including Organatomy, Renewal of Spirit and Rhythm Master.

The concert kicks off at 7:30pm with Connecticut jazz pianist and composer Earl MacDonald and his group Creative Opportunity Workshop. McDonald, whose work "Wanton Spirit" was the title track for Kenny Barron's 1994 Grammy-nominated CD, is the Associate Professor and Director of Jazz Studies at the University of Connecticut. Barron has called MacDonald, "an extremely talented pianist and composer with a firm grasp of the jazz tradition who is constantly searching for new ways to express himself."

Recently, MacDonald's compositions for a 17-piece jazz orchestra have been performed by the Airmen of Note, the Westchester Jazz Orchestra, the Millennium Jazz Orchestra, and numerous university jazz ensembles. For his work as Musical Director and Composer-in-Residence of the Hartford Jazz Society's "New Directions Ensemble," MacDonald was voted the distinction of "Best Jazz Group in Hartford" in a Hartford Advocate poll. His album releases include Visions - Works for Jazz Orchestra, the Earl MacDonald 6 - Echoes In The Night, and Mirror of the Mind which JazzTimes noted has "beautiful trio statements with MacDonald's steadily moving voicings...an expansive feeling and sound that brings to mind Aaron Copeland."

Members of Creative Opportunity Workshop are Kris Allen on saxophone, Christopher Hoffman on cello, and Rogerio Boccato on percussion. The group will perform original compositions and arrangements by MacDonald as well as a Nat King Cole Medley: Nature Boy, Calypso Blues by Eden Ahbez and Don George/Nat King Cole, I Never Told You by Johnny Mandel, and Blackbird by John Lennon and Paul McCartney.

Jazz NightOut is an annual sellout and reserving tickets early is highly recommended. Orchestra tickets are $40; balcony tickets are $30. Complimentary hors d'oeuvres and dessert/ coffee intermission are included. The box office and cash bars open at 6:30pm; concert begins at 7:30pm.
