Zac Greenberg's ‘UNEXPECTED JOURNEY' Inspired by Cancer
(Published: September 25, 2015)

(NEW YORK, NY) - There are few illnesses that so drastically and immediately change the course of one's life as cancer. Musician and composer Zac Greenberg expresses the intensity, fear, discomfort and hope experienced by many cancer patients, through his new album "Unexpected Journey."

"Unexpected Journey" is an ambitious jazz-rock concerto written in four movements, each representing a different phase of the turbulent journey on which cancer patients find themselves. The music ranges from peaceful and somewhat predictable ("Life") to shocking and unnerving ("Diagnosis"), frenetic ("Treatment") and finally, optimism ("Beyond").

Having lost two grandfathers to cancer, "Unexpected Journey" is especially personal for Greenberg. Produced in association with Musicians for Health, a nonprofit organization that raises awareness and supports medical charities, he spent several weeks interviewing doctors and patients.

"One of the things I heard echoing through all of my cancer research was how quickly and unexpectedly patients' lives change, once they are diagnosed," Greenberg said. "This music is a study into the human reaction in the face of unexpected unknowns and mortality."

The album is a recording of a live performance by the Zac Greenberg Quintet that occurred in Cincinnati, Ohio, to benefit the Barrett Cancer Center at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, where Greenberg's grandfathers were treated. Part of the performance can be seen here: https://youtu.be/p1u_qB8vA6o

Performing with Greenberg, who plays bass on the album, are Dave Engelhard (tenor sax), who is known for his work with the Zac Brown Band; Kevin Wunderlich (guitar); Amos Rose (guitar); and Bennett Eiferman (drums).

Greenberg studied music at Idyllwild Arts Academy in California, New York University and the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. He has studied under many established artists, including Jack Casady, Jorma Kaukonen, Fareed Haque, Stanley Clarke, Dave Pietro, Rich Shermaria, Drew Gress and many more.

"Unexpected Journey" is available on CD Baby at www.CDBaby.com/cd/zacgreenberg and other online music retailers.
