Lucia Pulido To Perform at Joe's Pub on March 31
Dynamic Colombian Singer, Melding Traditional Latin American Music with Free Jazz, Celebrates Critically Acclaimed Adventure Music Debut, Waning Moon
On March 31, vocalist Lucia Pulido will finally celebrate the release of her 2008 Adventure Music debut, Waning Moon, with a performance at Joe's Pub.
With one of the richest voices on the international Latin musical scene today, Lucia Pulido has mined the musical traditions of her native Colombia and other Latin American countries in an ongoing search for a distinct, experimental style. The New York Times said that, "Ms. Pulido holds on to the rawness of the original melodies while giving them a sophisticated new context."
On Waning Moon, the Colombian-born Pulido fused the talents of cutting edge New York players with those of her fellow Latin American musicians, and crafted a work that was lauded as "a striking hybrid of folkloric music and free jazz" by Jazz Times magazine, and as "unforgettable and powerful" by the Latin Jazz Corner.
Pulido's ensemble, Palenque, pays homage to the "chirimía", one of the many types of Colombian street bands, using traditional genres such as cumbia and bullerengue from the Atlantic Coast, currulaos from the Pacific Coast as well as joropos of the Colombian Eastern Plains as the point of departure for creative musical excursions. Pulido's vocal sophistication is enhanced in genres such as herding songs (cantos de vaquería), funeral laments (alabaos) and harvest chants (cantos de zafra), which give the singer the liberty to explore her voice fully. The ensemble also performs songs written for Lucía by composers Iván Benavides and Sebastián Cruz. Cruz is currently the arranger, musical director and guitarist for Palenque, which also features Stomu Takeishi (bass), Adam Kolker (clarinet) and Ted Poor (drums). www.luciapulido.com
