Weekend Getaway Release "Here Tonight"
(Published: February 24, 2016)

"Here Tonight"

Serendipity is capricious. In its undisciplined form it is merely a fortunate accident. However, married to disciplined purpose, it can take the measure of chance and produce extraordinary results. The story of Weekend Getaway is one of discipline and purpose sprinkled with a dollop of serendipity.

In 2012 and 2013 band co-founders Marcus Vess and Gary McKinney recorded and released several original beach songs including "Let's Shag on the Beach" and "Having a Good Time". Both songs were well-received but they wanted more, much more. They dreamed of organizing a group composed of exceptionally talented musicians to create a uniquely Southeastern sound to promote the rich heritage of R&B, Jazz, Soul and Carolina beach music. In 2014 they began the search.

Multi-talented keyboardist and lead vocalist Allen Cook was an early recruit. Cook immediately embraced the vision and the three set out in search of the perfect combination of musicality, attitude, compatibility, personality, passion and most importantly "heart" for the music and each other.

It was during this period Cook invited Vess to assess a group Cook was performing with. Playing with the ensemble that night was renowned saxophonist, Ollie Patterson. During a break, Cook introduced Patterson to Vess and after a brief conversation Vess prophetically proclaimed: "Ollie, we're going to do something special together".

Within weeks of this chance encounter, Cook and Vess met with Patterson to pitch him on joining the group and assuming the lead role in the emerging horn section. Without hesitation Patterson agreed and the four soon found they shared a kindred spirit and passion for this adventure.

With McKinney on guitar and vocals, Cook on keyboards and vocals, Vess on drums and vocals and Patterson forming the foundation of the horn section, the vision for Weekend Getaway began to take shape.

The recruiting effort now shifted into high gear. They painstakingly continued the serarch for other members that would transform an accomplished assemblage of talented musicians into the rockin', successful band Weekend Getaway has become.

During this stage, Patterson recruited Gil Estes, a formidable trombonist and director of the Atlanta Trombone Choir. Estes enthusiastically agreed and brought along not only incredible musical talent but a warm and supportive attitude toward building the group. To round out the section, Patterson invited trumpet heavy-hitter David Klausman. Klausman has an extensive background in arranging, directing and performing in jazz, orchestral and big-band groups and significantly enhanced the capabilities and versatility of the band. His soaring trumpet brings incredible power and vitality to the band's performances.

After exhaustively auditioning numerous bass players, the group selected Felton Dunn (formerly of the Kid Brothers Band) a seasoned and extremely talented musician to provide the foundation of the band's sound. The band was now complete.

From early days, members delighted in their shared passion for the music and quickly coalesced into high energy performances that enchanted and rocked audiences. Along with their original songs, their set lists often include classic hits from Earth Wind and Fire, Chicago, Tower of Power, The Sanford Townsend Band, Stevie Wonder and many others. Their vocal harmonies pay tribute to the spirit of the 70s, 80s reminiscent of classic groups as the Temptations, The O-Jays and Marvin Gaye.

Beginning with their debut performance in Athens, Georgia, the band has garnered rave reviews for their sound, their song-list of classic crowd-favorites and dynamic musical energy. Wherever they perform, their audiences experience magical, memorable music.

Weekend Getaway is available for concerts, festivals, weddings, conventions, corporate functions, private parties and other special events. You can contact them through their website or Facebook page.
