WITH HIS NEW BAND FEATURING TERRACE MARTIN, LIONEL LOUEKE, TREVOR LAWRENCE, JR. & JAMES GENUS

PLUS ROBERT GLASPER EXPERIMENT AS WELL AS SPECIAL SURPRISE GUESTS

SHOW AT 7PM / DOORS AT 6PM

"Herbie was the step after Bud Powell and Thelonious Monk, and I haven't heard anybody yet who has come after him." - MILES DAVIS

August 11, 2016 marks a new beginning for Jazz in New York with the first event from This is Our Music, a series with a mission to present creatively curated concerts and festivals throughout the year.

On this date Herbie Hancock will headline BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! at the Prospect Park Bandshell with a new band featuring Terrace Martin (keyboards and saxophones), Lionel Loueke (guitar), Trevor Lawrence, Jr. (drums) and James Genus (bass). Robert Glasper Experiment will perform an opening set, and special surprise guests are to be announced soon. This concert is presented in partnership with LPR Presents (Le Poisson Rouge), and is a benefit concert to support free programing at The BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival.

"I'm looking forward to playing at the BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival with some new music that I'm working on and a new approach on some of my older tunes. I'm also excited about working with some young musicians touring with me for the first time," says Hancock.

Herbie Hancock is a true icon of modern music. Throughout his explorations, he has transcended limitations and genres while maintaining his unmistakable voice. With an illustrious career spanning five decades, an Academy Award for his Round Midnight film score, 14 Grammy Awards including Album of the Year for "River: The Joni Letters," he continues to amaze audiences across the globe. There are few artists in the music industry who have had more influence on acoustic, electronic jazz and R&B than Herbie Hancock. Many of his compositions, including Canteloupe Island, Maiden Voyage, Watermelon Man, and Chameleon, are modern standards that have had a profound effect on all styles of modern music.

Herbie Hancock also maintains a thriving career outside the performing stage and recording studio. Recently named by the Los Angeles Philharmonic as Creative Chair For Jazz, he currently also serves as Institute Chairman of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz, the foremost international organization devoted to the development of jazz performance and education worldwide. Hancock is also a founder of The International Committee of Artists for Peace, and was recently awarded the much esteemed "Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres" by French Prime Minister Francois Fillon.

In July of 2011 Hancock was appointed a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador by Director-General Irina Bokova. UNESCO designated April 30th as International Jazz Day in 2011 and chose Hancock to preside along with Bokova. This year was hosted in Washington, DC and marks the 5th year of the ever growing event with a special concert at the White House featuring the illustrious lineup of Aretha Franklin, Sting, Wayne Shorter, Hancock and others. The concert opened with a speech by President Obama about the importance of jazz in the world and the concert was aired on ABC and lauded by Nate Chinen in the New York Times, "the event was a show of musical kinship across every kind of border."

Now in the fifth decade of his professional life, Herbie Hancock remains where he has always been: in the forefront of world culture, technology, business and music. Though one can't track exactly where he will go next, he is sure to leave his inimitable imprint wherever he lands.

The Robert Glasper Experiment performs a unique fusion of R&B, jazz, and hip-hop. Grammy winner Glasper is one of today's most accomplished and exciting pianists. He has worked with a wide variety of musicians including Mos Def, Q-Tip, Kanye West, Meshell Ndegeocello, J Dilla, Jay-Z, Talib Kweli, Slum Village, Questlove, and Maxwell. Glasper's 2012 breakout album, Black Radio, won Best R&B Album at the 2013 Grammy Awards, which was followed by Black Radio 2 (2013), another genre-defying effort that took the Black Radio blueprint and built to even greater heights, winning Glasper a second Grammy Award for Best Traditional R&B Performance. Glasper composed the original music for the Miles Davis film, Miles Ahead directed by and starring Don Cheadle. Robert Glasper recently joined the NYU Clive Davis Institute Faculty to co-teach a course on Miles Davis with author and faculty member Ashley Kahn. He is an official Steinway Artist. Performing with Casey Benjamin (saxophone/vocoder), Derrick Hodge (bass), and Mark Colenburg (drums) Glasper blends genres in the deepest and most compelling yet seamless fashion.

This Is Our Music celebrates the development and inspiration of improvised music and the Jazz of tomorrow. Curated with a focus on traditional roots and innovation, This Is Our Music proudly nurtures a broad inclusive community of forward looking music. Rooted with reverence to the music's past the series proudly references the genre defying album by Ornette Coleman. Offering his blessing, Ornette's son, Denardo affirms, "This Is Our Music is a seminal album and title by my father, this series continues in that expression of openness and creative exploration." Bringing musicians and audiences together in the spirit of open musical exploration, This Is Our Music presents carefully curated and compelling programming of new and established acts across many genres. The series will be the umbrella presenting organization of the NYC Winter Jazzfest and new programming throughout the year in New York City and beyond.
