Cuban drummer Francisco Mela begins the New Year with several New York performances that feature his own group
(Published: January 09, 2017)

On January 11, 2017, Cuban drummer Francisco Mela will return to Smalls Jazz Cafe with his own ensemble comprising Gerald Cannon (bass), Kris Davis (piano) and Hery Paz (sax). Among the repertoire performed will be music from Mela's latest release entitled "FE," which continues to receive favorable reviews and support from jazz media. The recording itself, released spring 2016, features The Crash Trio consisting of Gerald Cannon (bass) and Leo Genovese (piano), with special guest, guitarist John Scofield.

Mela closed out 2016 by performing alongside Gaston Joya (bass), and Yaroldi Abreu Robles (percussion), as part of a dynamic ensemble led by legendary Afro-Cuban pianist Chucho Valdés and acclaimed tenor saxophonist Joe Lovano. The newly formed group received critical acclaim and toured throughout Europe the United States and Canada. Earlier last fall, he was part of a special celebration of McCoy Tyner that featured Geri Allen and Craig Taborn, at the Jazz a la Villette in Paris, France.

Next month, Francisco Mela will be performing with his ensemble at the Cornelia Street Café (2/24) with new dates soon to be announced. He will also join pianist McCoy Tyner for several New York-area shows.
