Sam Friend New Release "Twin" - From the Co-Founder of the New Orleans Swamp Donkeys
(Published: January 17, 2017)

A Mix of R&B, Jazz & Pop
First Solo Masterpiece

The acclaimed singer-songwriter Sam Friend lost his twin sister, Molly, in 2015. In her honor, he has just released his first full-length solo album, TWIN. Friend, 28, was born in New York and moved to New Orleans in 2012, where he co-founded the The New Orleans Swamp Donkeys, which has performed at leading jazz festivals and clubs throughout Europe and America. A composer and guitarist, Friend was recently profiled for an hour on NPR by Michael Feinstein on his program "Song Travels." TWIN, the new CD, features all original music, spanning the rich cultural traditions of the city, traversing the worlds of Blues, Rock, Jazz, and Funk-brought to life by some of the most respected and sought-after musicians in the Crescent City. TWIN, with its lead track "Will You Change My Life?" (dedicated to his sister's memory) documents the pain and exhilaration, the grief and joy of one artist's path through New Orleans to cities across the globe.

"Sam Friend is like Ry Cooder by way of Charlie Christian with a soupcon of Dock Boggs, Louis Jordan, Jeff Buckley and Son House. Like a young Dylan, he's making something entirely new out of what came before."
- Sam Kashner, Vanity Fair

"Insists Sam Friend, a 27-year-old New Orleans-based composer and bandleader: 'The idea of jazz being niche is just a phase. Jazz started out as pop-music for the many, not just the few. And judging by the energy and size of the jazz crowds today, who's to say we can't make it pop again.'"
- Will Friedwald, Vanity Fair

"A wonderful combination of old style and modern sensibility."
- Michael Feinstein
