CHASIN TRANE; THE JOHN COLTRANE DOCUMENTARY WILL FINALLY BE SCREENED IN HIS NATIVE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA IN CHAPEL HILL, NORTH CAROLINA, MAY 2, 2017! by LARRY RENI THOMAS
(Published: May 01, 2017)

Since its highly-successful, much-talked-about international premiere at the prestigious Toronto Film Festival, Toronto, Canada, September 2016, John Coltrane fans in his native state of North Carolina, have been asking themselves one question-When will it be shown here?

Well, now they know. It was screened in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, April 27, 2017, and will be shown in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, May 2, 2017, at The Silver Spot Theater, 201 South Estes Drive. It will also be screened in Asheville, North Carolina, May 26 to June 1, 2017, at The Grail.

"Chasin Trane," directed by John Scheinfeld, has gotten rave and excellent reviews as a definitive story of John Coltrane's life. It is narrated by the actor Denzel Washington, and includes appearances by President Bill Clinton, scholar Dr. Cornel West and saxophone legends Sonny Rollins and Jimmy Heath. The film also features rare film footage on Coltrane at his home in Long Island, New York, where he composed his classic recording, "A Love Supreme."

Coltrane, an internationally-known musician and composer, was born in Hamlet, North Carolina, in 1926, and raised in High Point, North Carolina. He is a 1943 graduate of William Penn High School, High Point, North Carolina. He moved to Philadelphia shortly after he finished high school, where he began his musical career. After a stint in the US Navy, John returned to Philadelphia, where he performed with local bands. Later, he moved to New York where he worked with Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk and others. Coltrane eventually developed a distinctive sound, started his own group, recorded several albums, and became one of most influential musical artists in the world. Some of his compositions have become standards, have been used and recorded by countless number of musicians, and have been studied in university and college jazz studies departments. He died in Long Island, New York, 1967 of liver cancer.
