Vocalist Pauline Jean to Present a Series of Workshops on Haitian Folksongs and the History of Haitian Music
(Published: June 15, 2017)

Haitian-American vocalist Pauline Jean will present a series of workshops on Haitian Folksongs and the History of Haitian Music at the Conservatory Lab Charter School in Dorchester, MA, from June 20 to June 23, 2017. The multi-day clinic is part of the El Sistema music program; The curriculum entitled "The Musical Migration (Africa to the Americas)," is being presented to the school's elementary students over the course of several semesters.

Jean's presentation features original repertoire from her 2016 release, NWAYO, which, among other things, provides both a cultural and historical perspective through songs such as "Igbo Landing" (a soulful tribute to the ancestors of the Middle Passage) and "Their Blood, Bondye" (a somber ballad set to Edwidge Danticat's poem that recounts the sacrifices of the Haitian ancestors).

Earlier in June, Jean performed at the Build Haiti Foundation Gala - A Celebration of Columbia's 50th Anniversary, which took place at the Smith Theatre at Howard Community College in Columbia, MD. In August, Jean will be performing several concerts with Grammy Award-winning artist Dan Zanes, at the Getty Museum in Los Angeles, CA and the Holyoke Festival in Holyoke, MA.
