Composer/guitarist Charlie
Rauh unveils mastery on new album (Published: March 14, 2018)
Viriditas is a new, exciting release from musician Charlie Rauh. The title track begins with a seamless and intimate guitar section, exploring crystal-clear jazz tones, with the help of a few effects, such as reverse delays and echoes, adding depth and vigor to the music.
This release is all about electric jazz guitar at its best, at times flirting with old school influences, while opening the doors to a modern, diverse and engaging approach. The compositions on this album feel very spontaneous and there is an improvisational feel to it; obviously, a substantial amount thought are apparent in the arrangements.
Rauh's guitar style makes me think of artists such as Nels Cline, Julian Lage or Mark Ribot, with a stark and direct emotional feel. The eight cuts on the album are relatively short; the longest of
which, "Arolen," clocks in at slightly under four minutes. I love the idea of keeping these tracks short, like bursts of expressive playing.
