unfolds the voice to narrate the great music of our times
Artistic direction Roberto Bonati
From the 13th of November to the 6th of December the fourteenth Edition of PARMAJAZZ FRONTIERE, the international festival that for years has cast a transversal gaze on the panorama of jazz worldwide, and not only of jazz, tracing some paths for tomorrow's musical creativity, gets underway.
Among the primary protagonists of this edition: Paolo Fresu in a duet with Bojan Z, Terence Blanchard, Sidsel Endresen, Roberto Bonati.
As regards the usual appointments dedicated to the formation and experimentation of the pupils of the Academy of Music "A. Boito", protagonist of this year's workshop will be Graham Collier, English composer and double bass player, director of the department of Jazz at the Royal Academy of London for twelve years; through his music and his theoretic pieces of writing Collier has given a fundamental impulse to the reflection on the relationship between writing and improvisation for large jazz workforces when composing. The musician will also be the protagonist at the Casa della Musica in a concert with the jazz orchestra of the Academy of Music and also the protagonist at the presentation to the public of the volume "The Jazz composer - moving music off the paper".
PARMAJAZZ FRONTIERE has since years been the meeting-place of musicians who move towards the boundaries of the diverse artistic languages that characterize the contemporarity of our "global village": jazz, improvised music, ethnic music and the extra European ‘classical' music. Paying extremely particular attention to European music and to the young, convinced that Europe is an extraordinary laboratory of artistic production and that the young are its vital lymph. The event is organised by the Cultural Association ParmaFrontiere with the artistic direction of Roberto Bonati.
Let us go into more detail in the festival's programme.
First of all, like the previous editions of the Festival, this edition will be held in several spaces of the city of Parma: Teatro Due, Auditorium del Carmine, Casa della Musica, Academy of Music "A. Boito" and Sanvitale Palace. Numerous appointments, wisely distributed among great performers, new creations, seminars, meetings: from the 13th to the 22nd of November artists of high calibre will hand each other the baton, namely Paolo Fresu, who has already been a guest of the Festival in a duet with Bojan Z for this occasion, and among the most intelligent and energetic pianists active in recent years in the Parisian and European scene.
The programme includes the great Terence Blanchard: trumpet player, but above all jazz musician and composer of soundtracks, among the most influential of his generation, who has undoubtedly contributed to delineate the new profile of modern jazz. Numerous are the directors with whom he collaborated, among all Spike Lee: for the soundtrack of the movie the 25th hour Blanchard received the nomination to the Golden Globe.
Roberto Bonati will duet with Diana Torto with the project Ab Origine, matching vibrant chords, voices meeting, delicate and deep sounds in a magical ritual of nocturnal music. Primitive, wild and enchanted. In the second part of the evening the extraordinary voice of Sidsel Endresen in duet with Hakon Kornstad in a moving programme of Scandinavian sounds.
Among the names in the programme we would like to mention the pianists Antonio Zambrini and Alberto Tacchini, Italian talents nowadays renowned in the international scene as performers of high intensity and charisma.
The programme of the 29th of November includes a concert in honour of Maestro Giorgio Gaslini on the occasion of the eightieth birthday: some of the musicians who have collaborated with him will meet together with their instruments to remind us with affection the music of a big name in the story of Italian and international jazz.
The 2nd of December will host a series of concerts dedicated to the anniversary of the 25th year since the tragedy of Bhopal; a project of ParmaFrontiere shared with and supported by L'ISOLA D'ORO SRL of Parma and realized in collaboration with the Academy of Music "A. Boito" and Laba-Libera Accademia di Belle Arti di Brescia.
Lastly, to conclude the festival, the third appointment with Una Stanza per Caterina (A Room for Catherine), an artistic contribution dedicated to the memory of Caterina Dallara, a friend of music and of ParmaFrontiere: this year the dedication will have the voice and sonority of the duo Claudio Puntin and Gerdur Gunnarsdottir, from their work "Ylir" for ECM, proposing a suspended concert, intimate and passionate.
