Drummer Francisco Mela starts New Year with Blue Note Performance and Celebrates Recent Album Release on Newvelle Records
(Published: January 04, 2019)

On January 7, 2019, Cuban drummer Francisco Mela will lead his group at the Blue Note Jazz Club in New York for one set at 10:30 p.m. Joining him that evening, are pianist Ethan Iverson; saxophonist Hery Paz Tenor; and bassist John Hebert. This spring, Mela will return to the bandstand in New York city with his quartet once again but this time at Smalls Jazz Club in early April.

Toward the end of 2018, vinyl label Newvelle Records released Mela's most recent recording entitled Ancestros. The album features Hey Paz, saxophone/bass clarinet; Kris Davis, piano; Gerald Cannon, bass; and Mela on drums. The wide open and highly improvised style that has become primarily associated with Mela's playing is on display throughout, and the recording has already garnered considerable attention among critics.

Outside of his performances as a leader, Mela will be appearing with a handful of artists in-and-around the tri-state area over the next several months including ensembles led by Benito Gonzalez, Anthony Coleman, Kris Davis, Uri Gurvich, and Alon Yafnai.
