"The music of 2nd Chances is about making the most out of opportunities"Kenneth Brown
(Published: April 05, 2019)

Knoxville TN, March 8th, 2019- Drummer Kenneth Brown is back and with a incredible follow-up to his 2018 debut release 3 Down.

2nd Chances is produced by Kenneth and his father pianist Donald Brown. Overall it seems to capture the feeling of the great sound of jazz from the 50's and 60's!

Right away with track one Patiently Waiting a Kenneth Brown original that features fiery soloing and interplay between trumpeter Nicholas Payton and tenor saxophonist Chris Potter. Rejoining Kenneth on this tempo shifting tune from his debut release are Will Boyd on woodwinds, Darryl Hall the bassist, saxophonist Jamal Mitchell and vocalist Ashlee Varner. No doubt they're presence adds to the very tight sound achieved throughout!

Black And Blues a tune "dedicated to Nicholas Payton" and also a Kenneth Brown original is"more of a New Orleans 2nd line" as Kenneth states that along with Payton features vocalist Ashlee Varner doing a light as a feather jazz scat! It's Kenneth's drumming that maintains that steady "New Orleans feeling" that guides the all the way home!

It's on Softly As In A Morning Sunrise that Ashlee Varner takes her first lead vocal and her airy and graceful style is beautifully stated. Both Chris and Will Boyd on soprano have hair raising solo's. Brother Keith steps forward for another diamond cut solo and Kenneth keeps it swinging throughout!

Down At Smalls, a nod to the N.Y.C.jazz club and "in memory of Roy Hargrove" burns with tremendous energy and Kenneth Brown will not let you off the hook! Present are amazing and passionate soloing from Will Boyd soprano and Chris Potter on tenor saxophone! Quite reminiscent of one of Art Blakey's great Messenger bands!

With Feel inside My Heart there is serious dialogue between Nicholas Payton and on soprano Chris Potter, intense! Kenneth changes the groove up here and it's a roaring change of pace. Guitarist Steve Kovalcheck makes his debut here and adds just the right new color!

Speaking of changing the pace, the inclusion of You Don't Know What Love Is adds a nice mood to this 11 tune set with Ashlee VArner again on vocals.

Kenneth Brown's 2nd Chances puts all of his musical abilities on display. He wrote 6 of the 11 tunes. He arranged all but 2 of the tunes while they're all wonderfully arranged track 9 the Ex-Introvert with the horn section is a highlight in that regard

Kenneth Brown is a drummer and musician for all seasons whether it's Mr Groove or Senior Swing the music will be locked in!
