The Line Mortensen Trio soothes and uplifts on new EP (Published: June 28, 2020)
Line Mortensen is a gifted vocalist/composer whose new EP as a trio, Thoughts, is a soothing and emotional connection of songs, blurring the lines between the sophisticated edge of jazz and the intimacy of singer/songwriter music. In its entirety, Thoughts is emotional, direct and forward-thinking, often exploring unique soundscapes and distinctive creative ideas.
What makes this EP special is that it can't easily be described as belonging to a single genre, but rather a unique combination of influences. The stunning title track combines the intimacy of adult alternative music with the melodic variety of jazz, highlighting Mortensen's creativity and ability to add something more personal to her sound. The track "Media" has a caressing, melodic approach which gives the audience a cinematic feel and some powerfully introspective lyrics. "Little Girl" has a very nostalgic feel to it and a rich arrangement with some intriguing soundscapes. "Convention" is the most upbeat track on the EP, and it features a fast-paced jazz rhythm with some incredible vibes and stylistic inspirations ranging from blues to funk as well. This exciting fusion track brings a completely different dimension to the table, going for an edgy and energetic sound.
Last but not least, the final song is a ballad titled "Please Bring Some Comfort," which follows the EP's thread of intimate piano atmospheres and incredibly dynamic song structures. Ultimately, Mortensen is quite a versatile performer, and her songs shine in a trio setting, retaining a melodic and intimate feel, while also going for a more diverse and engaging vibe.
This is a relaxing effort, which I'd definitely recommend to any fan of artists as diverse as Bon Iver, Fiona Apple, or classic talents like Chet Baker and Ella Fitzgerard.
