#1 iTunes, #1 Amazon, as Soul/Jazz Singer Jarrod Lawson Earns National Coverage for Sophomore Album ‘Be The Change'

"Reinvigorating the soul/jazz genre, Lawson swings, scats and-above all-grooves, with an enthusiasm and joy much lacking in the genre and, more broadly, in our lives today" - ELMORE

Elmore Premieres New Video;

Jazziz Premieres Title Track

The "fitting next step from Marvin Gaye and Sam Cooke's work 50 and 60 years ago..."

A big return for Jarrod Lawson, as his sophomore album ‘Be The Change' hits #1 on the UK iTunes Soul/R&B albums, #1 on the Amazon U.S. Jazz Albums Digital Download Chart, Top Ten on the U.S. iTunes Soul/R&B chart and more. National coverage continues to build, as Elmore Magazine raves, "reinvigorating the soul/jazz genre, Lawson swings, scats and-above all-grooves, with an enthusiasm and joy much lacking in the genre and, more broadly, in our lives today," describing Lawson's sound as the "fitting next step from Marvin Gaye and Sam Cooke's work 50 and 60 years ago..." Jazziz Magazine exclusively premiered the title track, and praised the album as "...eleven originals that aim to speak to the hearts of the people and reflect the contemporary social climate."

For Portland-based Soul/Jazz singer/writer/pianist Lawson, the acclaimed 11-song collection of original music five years in the making. Released October 30th on Dome Records, and featuring Grammy-nominated percussionist Sammy Figueroa and a guest appearance by alternative soul trio Moonchild, ‘Be The Change' is a beautiful, restrained, dreamy mix of love songs, irreverence and social commentary, all delivered with the "blue eyed soul" about which The London Evening Standard praised, "it's not just Lawson's wide ranging tenor and ability to swing, scat and groove that has made him the biggest soul-jazz sensation in years. It's the way he's bringing spirituality back to a genre that had lost its depth."

More than a triple threat, singer/writer/pianist Jarrod Lawson also delivers on-point social commentary mixed in with his love songs and reminiscences. Reinvigorating the soul/jazz genre, Lawson swings, scats and-above all-grooves, with an enthusiasm and joy much lacking in the genre and, more broadly, in our lives today.

Coming out of Portland's burgeoning soul music scene, the smoky-voiced virtuoso pianist has been sending positive ripples around the globe with his powerful message music. "Be the Change," the title track from his new album and premiered here, is the fitting next step from Marvin Gaye and Sam Cooke's work 50 and 60 years ago, respectively.

Lawson told Elmore about the making of a video in the age of quarantine and deflected credit for his own contribution in his typical fashion:

"When I decided to reach out to Marcus Swanson at Swanson Studio in Portland regarding a collaboration for a music video, the opportunity presented itself to assemble my band for the first time since quarantine was introduced, which included flying out my dear friend, percussionist Sammy Figueroa from Miami. It was a wonderful excuse to stage a reunion with my musical brothers.

"Little did they know that by the end of this day they would have played ‘Be The Change' about 40 or 50 times...(sorry guys!). The video shoot was an incredibly enriching experience for all of us. The crew at Swanson Studio were exceedingly professional, articulate, skillful, and sensitive to the vision and artistic orientation of the song. This was my first experience of making a video, but I couldn't imagine working with a more capable and quality outfit."

JAZZIZ Exclusively premiered the title track:

Soul/jazz vocalist Jarrod Lawson unites with legendary percussionist Sammy Figueroa on his new album, Be The Change. Due out on October 30 via Dome Records, it presents eleven originals that aim to speak to the hearts of the people and reflect the contemporary social climate. The title track is inspired by Mahatama Gandhi's famous words that "You must be the change you wish to see in the world." "My intent with this lyric," explains Lawson, "is to offer a glimpse of a future where social and environmental irresponsibility dissolves to make way for accountability and foresight. A world where the concerns of future generations become the concerns of this and every generation."

More about the project:

Although Stevie Wonder/Al Jarreau references have warmly followed Lawson throughout his career, astute listeners may pick up some subtle nods to other contemporary artists on the new album. For example, on ‘I'll Be Your Radio', there's a Janet Jackson 'That's the Way Love Goes' vibe...on ‘Battlefield', the opening seconds may evoke Billy Joel's ‘River of Dreams'...on ‘Universal Chord', Lawson seems to be channeling multi-faceted artist Terence Trent D'Arby, 'Soul Symphony' conjures Prince, ‘Embrace What We Are' suggests a reverence for Marvin Gaye, and the vocal phrasing on ‘How Long' is reminiscent of Sting.

Taken together, these unexpected treats for the listener (whether intentional or not,) root Lawson's songs in a broader musical conversation that may pique the interest of new and long-time fans alike.

Though some have described Lawson as a ‘soul artist masquerading as a jazz artist', and others as ‘a jazz artist masquerading as a soul artist', when it comes down to the songs themselves, they are reflections of Jarrod's respect for his musical peers, his connection with his father (‘Universal Chord',) the grounding influence of his new partner (in ‘Evalee',) and of course his views of the complicated world we're all living in. He comments, "The subject matter across the album is quite diverse. There are sincere messages and moments of urgency tempered by inoffensive, lighthearted offerings which bring levity and balance to the album. A handful of love songs sprinkled throughout will be a pleasant surprise to those who have longed for more of that subject matter in my work. The album also includes a spattering of thought-provoking compositions aimed at bringing to light many of the social and political issues that we face currently with regard to race relations and leadership accountability."

Also arriving in just over a month is the new album from soul singer/pianist Jarrod Lawson. His new album "Be The Change" includes eleven original tracks that are the perfect soundtrack for an evening at home with a glass of wine in front of a roaring fire. He starts off with the title-song "Be The Change," which instantly draws you in with his warming vocals and up-beat R&B vibe. The soul trio, Moonchild lend a hand with some amazing harmonies on "I'll Be Your Radio," before getting a little funky with the flow of "Battlefield." You can definitely hear Jarrod influences on the pop touch of "Why Don't You Call Me Baby Anymore" and "Embrace What We Are," before he wraps up his new album with the jazzy island rhythm of "How Long."
