Giorgos Tabakis unveils innovative, timeless guitar skills on new album
(Published: December 02, 2020)

Giorgos Tabakis is a jazz guitar player from Athens, Greece. He recently came out with a stunning studio album, Dual Nature. Somewhere in between timeless and innovative, this record explores the artist's background as a jazz performer while letting other influences creep in and add more definition to his sound.

The album opener, the title track itself, is a really effective intro because it immediately sets a tone for the entire record, allowing the audience to familiarize themselves with Tabakis' concept. The song "Interface" is one of the highlights on the LP. The arrangement is strong, and the performance of these musicians is just as powerful, perfectly supporting the compositional merits of the music. "Dawn Day Dusk" is another fantastic track, which acts as a wonderful compendium of all the skills, artistry, and songwriting mastery that went into the making of this release.

Last but not least, the closing song, "Spotlight," is another fantastic example of how this album hits the mark, not only in terms of performance value but also in terms of production and artistic aesthetics overall. I would definitely recommend listening to this release if you are a fan of performers such as Julian Lage, as well as Gustavo Santaolalla, Yann Tiersen, or Wintergatan, only to mention but a few. Besides Tabakis' artistry, the album features precious contributions from German clarinetist Rebecca Trescher, who takes on a lead-instrument role on many songs, leaving Tabakis with rhythm duties and creating an articulate, mesmerizing soundscape with guitar and clarinet. It's almost easy to forget that there are only two instruments on songs like the aforementioned "Interface."

As the title of this stunning effort might suggest, its inner dualism is definitely something to behold. On the one hand, the music is incredibly sophisticated and intelligently crafted. On the other, there is also a lot of room for instinct. This balance is not always easy to achieve, and if artists swing too much toward either side, they might risk falling flat when it comes to the execution of their releases. On Dual Nature, Tabakis managed to fall right in the middle, creating an outstanding collection of songs that stay true to the artist's jazz influences while exploring the genre from a different perspective.

Find out more about Tabakis, and do not miss out on Dual Nature, which is currently available on the artist's official Bandcamp page and elsewhere on the web.
