Ashley Wey soothes with warm new album
(Published: September 17, 2021)

As a world-class pianist and vocalist, Ashley Wey is an artist with a rounded sound which feels incredibly dynamic and diverse. She set out to develop a warm and soothing sound, with ties to jazz music, and Easy Listening, valuing smooth production aesthetics and catchy compositions.

Her piano performances are truly outstanding, and she plays like a songwriter, in the sense that she doesn't feel the need to constantly show off her technical skills by overplaying, but rather serve the music in a more seamless way. As a result, the compositions are incredibly balanced, providing each instrument the chance to stand out, with some great dynamics.

Her most recent output, Hummingbird, feels like a great taste of what comes out of Ashley's creativity, and it is an amazing example of what this talented artist can accomplish.

The album features eight studio tracks, including the beautiful opener "She's No Lady," which sets the mood to absolute perfection. "Hummingbird," the title track, is another exciting piece of music, while "One More Day" stands out as one of the most accomplished and cohesive compositions on this release.

"Sunrise" offers a bright, expansive, and uplifting creative scope, while "Sterioso" feels smooth and playful, a perfect combination of modern jazz and fusion. "Just Squeeze Me" is an amazing jazz-pop number with a very intricate rhythm pattern, and a taste of Ashley's classic, timeless vocal chops.

She is an excellent vocalist with a warm and beautiful tone that suits the music. "Initially and Finally" hits the mark with an amazing arrangement, while "Destiny" is a perfect conclusion to the album.

This masterful approach to music is what makes her music stand out, and as a result, Hummingbird feels like a genuine example of what it means to make great jazz music in this day and age. This one should be on your radar if you are a fan of artists such as Keith Jarreth, Tori Amos, and Chet Baker, only to mention but a few! Ashley is always ready to challenge herself, and Hummingbird is a unique statement that showcases so many different influences smeared across the compositional spectrum to form a vivid and lush picture of an artist with an excellent level of musicianship on tap.
