Detailed Description / Musicians What happens when a musical explorer whose boyhood inspirations were Armstrong, Basie and Goodman falls back in love with jazz in New Orleans? After such a visit in 2011, Welsh-born clarinettist Daniel McBrearty hired a rhythm section, and recorded a homage to his musical first love.
"I was in NOLA with a singer friend", he says. "We were in Oak St Cafe one morning. Charles Farmer, a lovely local pianist, was playing standards from the 20s and 30s. I sat in, although it's been many years since I played those tunes. Once again I felt the warmth and joy in that music."
Back in Belgium, where he now lives, Daniel contacted pianist Dirk Van der Linden (who has worked with such as Clark Terry, Scott Hamilton and Red Holloway).
After a brief meeting, two days of recording in Antwerp followed, bassist Jean Van Lint joining for the second.
Three of the nine tracks on Clarinet Swing are Daniel's originals, the rest are chosen standards.
Musicians:
Daniel McBrearty - clarinet, vocals on 8
Dirk Van der Linden - piano
Jean Van Lint - bass on 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9 |

Daniel McBrearty is a busy musician, living in Antwerp, Belgium. Over the last 30 years, his musical journey, which began with classic American jazz, has passed through explorations of funk and soul, celtic folk, meditational Indian music, and back full circle - to swing.
Born in Wales in 1964, Daniel moved to Antwerp in 2001 after spending 20 or so years in and around London. While in London (1990 to 1999) he was active on the jazz and funk scene there, and cut his teeth as a writer and producer. Starting a family in 2000, he moved to Antwerp, Belgium in 2001, and was slowly drawn back to his jazz roots through contact with local musicians such as Paolo Radoni. In 2010, now with 30 years of experience, Daniel became a full time musician.
He is a largely self-taught, apart from private lessons with a few selected teachers, and has honed his skills by playing in many groups over the years. Now, his main interests are playing jazz saxophone and clarinet, his style heavy on blues, swing and bebop, and composing and arranging.
He sometimes teaches songwriting and ensemble playing at Jazz Studio, Antwerp. |
