Description:
It is not easy performing on an electrified trombone: It's difficult to play in tune and to avoid a muddy sound. Robin Eubanks plays the instrument convincingly, imitating the sound of the electric guitar. While this recording is not the final statement on the electric 'bone, Eubanks shows that it can be blown accurately, tunefully, and uniquely. While he splits his time with some fine acoustic work, it is the electric version that makes this album something different. Without the electricity, Eubanks is as smooth as J.J. Johnson, with a wonderful legato tongue that places him in the heart of the hard bop tradition. When electrified, Eubanks is a transformed Hendrix of the sackbut, and when he adds the requisite vocals and percussion, as on the title cut, "Get 2 It," Eubanks goes for the gold. It helps to be in the company of pianist/ organist George Colligan, who rollicks ever so suavely. It also helps to be accompanied by brother Kevin, a consummate guitarist. On the final track, the trombonist talks about the recording, an interesting replacement (or potential supplement) for liner notes. (It is surprising that this is not done more often.)

Robin Eubanks is a musician that is always looking to express and communicate his life through music. Currently, his primary means of doing this is by leading his band, Mental Images, performing with the critically acclaimed, multi-award winning, Dave Holland Quintet and his position as Assistant Professor of Jazz Trombone at the Oberlin Conservatory.

He has long been considered to be at the forefront of new directions in music and on the trombone in particular. His recording, Get 2 It, has received rave reviews. Jazz Times said, "Live, as on record, Eubanks makes it all work artfully, like tiles in an intricate, logical yet intuitive, and slightly surreal mosaic....[he is] one of the finest jazz trombonists alive..."

Robin has studied music and the trombone since he was eight years old and continues to do so. After graduating cum laude from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, he moved to New York to further his development. He's amassed an impressive, varied array of musical experiences. Robin has performed and/or recorded with Elvin Jones' Jazz Machine, Mingus Big Band, the Rolling Stones, Slide Hampton's Jazz Masters, Eddie Palmieri, Talking Heads, Barbra Streisand, Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers and many others. He's done work on television and film including The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Saturday Night Live, "Jungle Fever" and "Mo' Better Blues." He's also performed on Broadway in "Black and Blue," "Dream Girls" and "Grease." Robin lectures and conducts master classes at many leading educational institutons throughout the U.S. and abroad. He's also been a multiple winner of both DownBeat and Swing Journal's International Polls.
