It's been so bad that I am already feeling myself backlashing at the backlash. Some sites are calling test users "Glassholes." This would have a certain appeal if it was coined because we were sick of people wearing or using Google Glass(es), but since what I'm sick of is the overkill coverage of a still non-phenomenon, I think the people who get off on constantly using the term "Glassholes" are the real assholes.

One or both of my last two albums will be featured in Jazziz Magazine this summer, for which I am grateful. Almost no one has heard either one, which doesn't make me happy but it isn't as if I am dedicating my life to being discovered so I will take what I get in terms of recognition.

That said...yesterday, I spent the day in a friend's studio, creating the base of a new album. it is an entirely new concept for me.

I set up my beautiful handmade drum set (Le Sopranos, made in Italy), got a good sound and then started playing. I had nothing composed at all. My idea was to play the drums, thinking melodically, and then to see what came out and compose music on top of it all. Maybe all percussion instruments or some percussion and a middle eastern singer if that worked, or maybe I'll play piano on top of something...who knows? Not I.

I stuck to my vision for the most part. Later in the day I wimped out and just laid down drum tracks for two tunes where I know that I'm going to want to add bass and piano some day--might as well take advantage of the lovely mic collection in this studio! But for the most part, it was just improvising.

This clip is a good example, both of the concept and the way I play drums. I used to be a good big band and small jazz group drummer. Today, a lot of Ringo has crept back into my playing and it's just what I sound like. Anyway, as you listen, imagine a percussion ensemble (djembe, clay pot drum, bongos, shakers, etc) playing interlocking figures and then suddenly coming together in unison for some of the more dramatic drum parts. COuld be cool. Could be nothing. :)

I hope it's at least interesting to you, but of course I hope you'll enjoy it too.

This book contains all the modal scales (major and minor included) for piano with fingers number listed in a handy spreadsheet. The preface is in italian (about 2 pages) and easy to understand because it explains how i numbered the fingers on the scales with a new system that allows the student to focus more on memorization.I recommend this book to every pianist, for jazz and classical study and to improve the musical language and understanding.

Deadline for musicians to enter Art Prize, June 6th:

MUSIC RETURNS TO ARTPRIZE AND $10,000 OF MUSIC PRIZES
WILL BE GIVEN BY ST. CECILIA MUSIC CENTER
IN FIVE GENRE CATEGORIES

DEADLINE FOR REGISTRATION IS June 6, 2013

St. Cecilia Music Center continues as ArtPrize Music Hub
in 2013 with five special music prizes to be presented

GRAND RAPIDS, MI (May 2013) – St. Cecilia Music Center will continue its role as the music hub during ArtPrize 2013 and will once again award $10,000 in prize money specifically to musical entries.

St. Cecilia Music Center will be presenting five $2,000 awards in the categories of pop/electronic, rock/blues, folk/country, jazz and classical. The winners will be chosen by the popular vote on the ArtPrize website.

New this year will be the addition of official ArtPrize “busking stations” in five different locations throughout Grand Rapids during the first two weeks of the event. SCMC will schedule entered musicians for these various performance areas where they may perform live for the public at large. Musicians may display their voting number and perform multiple times if desired, based on time availability. Non-ArtPrize performances will not be permitted at these sites. There will also be performance opportunities at St. Cecilia Music Center and on Wood TV 8.

Listening stations will be available during the entire three weeks of ArtPrize (September 18-October 6) featuring musical entries and music will be featured on the ArtPrize website.

The grand prize given by ArtPrize is $200,000 and all music will be eligible for the performance/time-based juried award of $20,000.

FACT SHEET for entering a musical/performance piece:

•	The song or piece must be an original piece of music written within the last three years.

•	You must register on the ArtPrize website and create an artist profile by June 6. Enter at www.artprize.org. VERY IMPORTANT: List your form as “Performance” and your medium as “Music.”

•	There must be a recording of the piece embedded on the ArtPrize website by the time ArtPrize begins. A recording of the piece must be provided to SCMC by September 1. You will need to use a media player from another website such as YouTube.com or Vimeo.com for video and SoundCloud.com for audio. You can create a free account on one of those type of sites and then paste the embed code in the space provided on the Work Entry form. Questions regarding embedding can be answered at artists@artprize.org.

•	Once you create your profile musicians should “connect” to St. Cecilia Music Center so requests can be seen.

•	You must pay the registration fee as needed. $50 for solo artist and $25 per additional collaborators.
