Equinox Jazz Festival - Boston

I am writing to you today to ask for your assistance in helping to promote our upcoming 4th Annual Equinox Music Festival and new initiative of Jazz For Food.

Jazz For Food will allow your listeners the ability to attend any-and-all festival events FREE, in exchange for a charitable food donation that will go to benefit The Greater Boston Food Bank.

How you can help is, as you go through you daily play list, should you play any of the artists appearing with Equinox and Jazz For Food this year, if you could bring this to the attention of your listeners. Your listeners can Click-N-Print their Free tickets directly off the Equinox website.

Here is this years' line-up;

4th Annual Equinox Music Festival
13 November - 27 November 2004
John Hancock Hall, Boston MA

Equinox will be presenting, the World Premiere of the Phairelady All-Stars - the first pairing of the legendary pianist Kirk Lightsey with the young rising star of trumpet, Jeremy Pelt. Joining Pelt and Lightsey will be bassist Rufus Reid, saxophonist Marcus Strickland and vocalist Denise Jannah (drummer still TBD)

Other artists being presented in the 4th Annual Equinox Music Festival include;

Madeleine Peyroux (new, red-hot, much-acclaimed CD just out)
Indonesian star Luluk Purwanto with the Dutch-American Rene van Helsdingen Trio,
Jaco Pastorius Big Band (voted Best Album of 2003 by JazzWeek)
David Burrell - Andrew Cyrille Duo
Rumba Club
Mango Blue
Kit McClure Quintet (All Female group)
The Young Lions (a group of 12-13-year olds)

The 2004 Equinox All Stars (led by Tim Ingles and Frank Wilkins)

Is the fest cancelled? I just got the following in email from D. Fox:

Dear music lovers, friends, and supporters,

I have just got word that the BeBop at the Brattle interview series has been
canceled!

The sponsor -- Equinox Music Festival Inc. -- has filed bankruptcy and will
close down its operation immediately and indefinitely. Therefore I regret that the scheduled interview with me and the Boston Globe's Bill Buettler will not take place at the Brattle Theatre this Saturday morning (11/13)

I am sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused you. I will definitely let you know about my future performances and concerts scheduled in the Boston area.

As always, thank you for supporting the music, and I hope to see you all
again soon.

Best wishes,
Donal Fox
Composer/pianist

The entire Equinox festival is kaput. I got the email yesterday that it was filing bankruptcy and that all performances were cancelled. I was really looking forward to playing this one. Rough out there....

It is so disheartening to hear this kind of news....Was there some funny business going on that they would go bankrupt after booking this year?

Sorry Mark and to all the folks we were planning to attend and planning to play.

Mark look for email from me now...

From Boston.com:

BEBUMPED
Forget about hearing jazz pianist/composer Donal Fox at BeBop at the Brattle this weekend. The event's been canceled and the sponsor, Equinox Music Festival Inc., has gone belly up. A message posted on the festival's website cites "circumstances beyond our control," but an e-mail from festival founder J. Thomas Duffy paints a grimmer picture. "The losses we've suffered are pretty staggering," he wrote. How staggering? According to Duffy, $400,000 pledged by, among others, Bank of America, Tyson Foods, Dannon Yogurt, Dunkin Donuts, and Citizen's Bank has evaporated, forcing Equinox to declare bankruptcy and dissolve the company. (Last year, Equinox also canceled a string of shows citing poor ticket sales.) "It hasn't been for a lack of effort or names," Duffy said yesterday, referring to acts such as Cecil Taylor, Omar Sosa, Anthony Brown, and Manny Oquendo. "Is it Boston? Is it jazz? Is it the economy? I don't know."
