Michele Rosewoman and New Yor-Uba Perform at The Painted Bride, October 23, 2010 (Published: September 09, 2010)
Pianist, composer, and bandleader Michele Rosewoman leads her New Yor-Uba ensemble in a performance at The Painted Bride in Philadelphia on Saturday, October 23, 2010 at 8:00 p.m.
Michele Rosewoman has made her mark in the jazz world as a highly original artist, fusing Afro- Cuban influences with intelligent and modern post- bop. Throughout her varied career, Michele has performed with such jazz luminaries as Julian Priester, Oliver Lake, Reggie Workman, and with Celia Cruz, Paquito D'Rivera, and Orlando "Puntilla" Rios. As a bandleader, she has led two ensembles, New Yor- Uba and Quintessence, to tremendous critical acclaim.
Explosive melodic lines and multi-directional improvisation take you on a journey with Michele's New Yor-Uba ensemble. This ten-piece ensemble integrates brass, saxophones and a rhythm section with a folkloric core: three bata and conga drummers, traditional vocals and dance.
New Yor-Uba performs in honor of master Cuban percussionist/vocalist Orlando 'Puntilla' Rios, who was the featured ensemble member since its debut in 1983 until his passing in 2008.
The event is co-produced by Habana | Harlem (TM).
