Michele Rosewoman Interviewed on WKCR, September 15, 2010
(Published: September 09, 2010)

On September 15, 2010 WKCR-FM will interview Michele Rosewoman and broadcast rare live recordings of her performances at the now-legendary venue Soundscape. The venue emerged as a vital part of the city's live music spectrum thirty years ago, as the brainchild of music producer Verna Gillis and her late husband, sculptor Bradford Graves. Soundscape served as the first New York venue to present Michele as a leader, and also proved a vital location for the further development of her unique approach to fusing Cuban folkloric traditions with jazz.

The evening's broadcast is part of a larger series, in which complete sets and interviews from the artists who gave birth to world jazz and downtown improv at Soundscape are broadcast by WKCR-FM, starting September 6. For a full schedule of the broadcast, which includes performances by Rashid Ali, Jimmy Lyons, Julius Hemphill, Sun Ra, Milford Graves, Marilyn Crispell, Leo Smith, Mario Rivera, Daniel Ponce, and Paquito D'Rivera, visit their website at www.wkcr.org.

We invite you to hear some of Michele's earliest New York musical collaborations, including performances with her own ensembles and with Daniel Ponce's ensemble. Excerpts from live New Yor-Uba recordings as well as tracks from her CD releases will also be featured. Michele will appear on "The Musician's Show" with host Daro Behroozi from 6-9 p.m., as well as on "Musica en Nueva York" with hosts Anayvelyse Allen-Mossman and Willie Avendano from 10-11 p.m.

WKCR broadcasts on 89.9 FM in New York City, and streams live at www.wkcr.org.
