Hod O'Brien, Harold O'Neal lead stellar lineup of pianists performing legendary composer's work
The music of legendary jazz pianist Thelonius Monk will be celebrated in Monk at 93, a free concert showcasing performances by a stellar lineup of his leading disciples on October 14th at the World Financial Center Winter Garden.
The annual birthday concert continues Arts World Financial Center's 10-year march toward the Thelonius Monk centennial in 2017.
On October 14th, an eclectic roster of piano virtuosos will once again take the stage at the glass-vaulted Winter Garden to perform compositions by Monk, an architect of bebop whose influence can be heard across a multitude of musical genres.
Participants include bebop luminary Hod O'Brien, a contemporary of Monk's who performed with the Oscar Pettiford Quintet; Latin sensations Helio Alves and Edsel Gomez; contemporary jazz masters Harold O'Neal and Frank Kimbrough, and young upstarts Gerald Clayton and Robert Glasper.
Monk, born October 10, 1917, is considered one of America's greatest composers and one of the most influential figures in the history of jazz. His startlingly original music dominated the jazz scene from the 1940s through the 1960s. Today he is widely accepted as a master of American music, and his compositions constitute the core of the jazz repertoire.
