SFJAZZ Presents... Rumba Cubana w/ Sandy Perez, Jesus Diaz, and More! (Published: July 17, 2013)
Saturday, August 3rd 12-1:30pm
Explore the dynamic and spontaneous world of Cuban rumba from three of the Bay Area's master rumberos in this hands-on workshop. Among the island's most important folk traditions, rumba is the utmost Creole expression as well as the surefire way to get a party started (or keep it lasting into the wee hours!). Featuring Cuban natives Sandy Pérez (Afro Cuba de Matanzas), Jesús Diaz (QBA) and Erick Barbería (Rumberos de Cuba), students will explore all of the elements of rumba performance, including the intricate drumming and percussion patterns and call-and-response singing, while learning the distinct styles from the city of Matanzas (rumba's birthplace) to Havana. A variety of traditional instruments will be used, including tumbadoras (conga drums), cajones (box drums) and the all-important claves. Some drums will be provided, and students are welcome to bring their own instruments. Ideal for older teens and adults, all levels welcome!
